MCMC: Fine, imprisonment for offenders spreading unverified news, speculations on 1MDB

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has warned the public to stop spreading doctored pictures, unverified news or any speculations regarding the probe on 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) via social media including WhatsApp.
MCMC said on its official Facebook page that it was an offence to spread false information as it may breach the law, particularly Section 211 or 233 of Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. If found guilty, offenders may face a fine of not more than RM50,000 and/or maximum imprisonment of one year.
It was recently reported that money from a government-linked investment arm was funneled into the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's personal account. Najib has since denied the allegations. A special task force has been set up to carry out investigation into the issue.
The team, led by Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed, has frozen six bank accounts of parties believed to be involved in the case on Monday.
