HOME this isn't - not yet for Madam Nazara Mohamed and her husband.
They wanted to renovate it before they moved in.
But six months after the work started, wires still hang from the ceiling, lights can't be switched on, kitchen and bedroom cabinets remain uncompleted and pieces of wall tiles are missing.
So is the contractor, by the way.
Allegedly after collecting $15,000 for the renovation work.
But how could it ever happen?
Madam Nazara and her surveyor husband were not easily duped.
They did their homework and went to a properly accredited contractor.
The 32-year-old housewife, who is staying with her parents together with her husband and two children aged 6 and 8, told her story.
They downgraded from their Hougang four-room flat, which they sold for $242,000 to buy this three-room flat in Telok Blangah for $188,000 last year.
Said Madam Nazara: 'We've to downgrade as my husband's job is not very stable. He gets paid only when there's a job.
'And that's why we try to save on renovation too. My sister-in-law recommended this interior designer. They seemed quite professional and quoted us about $16,000 for the renovation work.'
The interior design company, HomeTech Design & Innovate, undertook the renovation, which including making kitchen and bedroom cabinets, wall tiling and electrical wiring for the whole house.
Madam Nazara said work started last December, and continued till the kitchen tiles were almost completed when the owners of the company asked for the rest of the payment in February this year.
STOPPED WORK MIDWAY
'They said they needed the money to pay the contractor for building the cabinets first. That's why I paid almost 90 per cent of the full sum,' said Madam Nazara.
But the contractor stopped work a few weeks into the project.
Madam Nazara said the company kept postponing the completion, with excuses that the contractor was busy with other jobs.
Then all of a sudden, the work stopped for good last month.
'I tried calling them but no-one answered the phone. I went to their office but their neighbours said they've not been seen for a while. I didn't know what to do, so I made a police report,' she said.
She also made a complaint to HBay, which lists accredited contractors.
The firm was listed with HBay then.
When contacted, HBay said they've received a number of complaints about the company over the past two months.
HBay added that the firm has been around for about six years with a pretty good track record, that's why they approved the accreditation then.
But they have since terminated the firm's membership.
HBay has about 40 members, who have to undergo three to six months' observation by HBay before approval is given.
Said an HBay spokesman: 'We're very careful and stringent about our membership but we can't stop these things from happening. We suspended the firm immediately after the complaints came and terminated them two months ago.
'We spoke to the boss who said that he had financial problems. But he has since disappeared.'
We tried to reach the company but were unable to reach the owners - a husband-and-wife team - on their handphones or office numbers.
Even their home at Joo Chiat looked like it has been vacated for a while, with old newspapers strewn around the porch and unread mail in the letter-box.
HBay said they've recommended a lawyer to the various home-owners who's looking into the case now.

Don't pay in full, HBay advises
PAY in instalments as the work is being done, said HBay. It recommends what it calls 'progressive payment'.
Explained an HBay spokesman: 'This means you pay when a certain portion of the job is done.'
With the progressive payment method, the home-owner pays a 10 per cent deposit of the agreed renovation fee at the start, and another 40 per cent when the materials are delivered to the house.
And only when the wet-works (plastering and concreting) is done should you pay another 40 per cent to the contractor, said HBay.
Added the HBay spokesman: 'The home-owner can pay the remaining 10 per cent when the rest is done. It's best to have everything in black and white, to protect yourself.'

majoriti yang kena tipu pun selalu orang2 susah, yang kurang sumber untuk pegi buat claim.. |

ni aku cakap pengalaman aku duk kat rumah parents, pengalaman pegi rumah members, pengalaman borak2 ngan kawan2 luar...
selalu melayu, kalo kontraktor mesti nak sokong kontraktor melayu..
tapi aku cakap ah, kadang2 ni kontraktor melayu pun macam siot, buat keja asal boleh..., mula2 semua manis je, lepas tu,
kita pulak macam kena bodoh2, tunggu la kat rumah pagi sampai petang, dia tak datang, sampai kita pulak yang kena pegi kedai dia tanya kenapa tak datang, pasal telepon pun tak guna...
tu hari rumah aku renovate, kontraktor so called melayu la, tapi aku nengok semua geng india je...
so aku dah tak puas hati la, aku ada bising jugak kat mak aku... apsal ambik kontraktor ni, dah la mahal, keja macam siot, harap iklan sokkabar je best...
so kebetulan at the same time, aku pegi tanya member aku, yang dah long time jadi house agen , so aku tanya la, kontraktor2 so called melayu , mana yang ko avoid? dia pulak sebut nama kontraktor yang betul2 tengah renovate kat rumah mak aku...
so betul la, bukan rumah aku je kena, kalo member aku yang house agen pun cakap the same thing...
ada satu rumah aku pernah pegi jugak, korang kalo tengok, korang pun tak percaya... , flooring dia senget..., maksud aku, alignment floor tiles tak parallel ngan the room. Korang bayangkan la, room tu rectangle, tapi floor tiles senget.... sedih aku nengok.... orang dah belanja ribu2..
... bukan tak nak tolong orang kita...tapi orang kita selalu kasi trouble.... |

Ni pengalaman Chic pulak. Hari tu, nak servis a/c. My fren recommend abg melayu ni. Set appt hari Jumaat for him to come on Sunday pukul 2 petang. My hubby took leave on that day to wait for him to come.
Pukul 2 tak nampak batang hidung dia so I called my fren. My fren called him, dia kata lepas Zuhur, dalam hati tertanya jugak, pukul 2 ni dah lepas Zuhur apa, tapi kita diam. Tunggu sampai pukul 4 pun tak timbul2, so I called my fren lagi tanya abang tu cakap lepas Zuhur ke lepas Asar? Tak lama Abang to call, cakap dengan my hubby dia datang pukul around 5.30. Time tu kira dah hot jugak lah kitorang coz tertunggu2. But my hubby ya kan aje.
Lebih kurang 10 minit lepas tu, abang tu call lagik. This time I yang angkat telefon. Guess what? Dia cakap dia tak dapat datang hari tu sebab barang2 untuk servis a/c dia pat rumah kawan dia, takder pat dia. He asked kalau boleh datang besoknya tak.
What kind of excuse is that? Firstly, the appt was fixed 2 days in advance, alot of time for you to get whatever you needed from your fren's place, and secondly you could have saved us both from wasting time in waiting and hassling you. So I told him off. I said you just wasted our time and my hubby's one day leave just waiting around for you. So I told him forget it.
Kita bukan apa, tapi kalau dia beritahu siang2 dia tak boleh datang, we could have taken my daughter somewhere, in other words, made full use of my hubby's one day leave. Ni tidak, buang masa tunggu dia pat rumah. Macam mana nak support orang kita kalau perangai macam gini? But of course tak boleh generalise lah... |

yang heran, lepas berdalih2, dia lagi bleh cakap barang takde pada dia..
at least kalo cakap , on the way pegi rumah ko, vehicle rosak ke, kena stuck kat banjir ke, tak sedap badan ke, pun alright jugak...
dahsyat wooo..... tak bleh accept..
tapi selalu gini, kalo delivery barang pun sama.... janji punya janji, tapi datang lambat... |
