Alien... "Life Cycle" :Prometheus 4 dummies
Tadaaaaa!......
 
The opening of the film shows an Engineer sacrificing himself on an unnamed planet. We assume it's Earth, showing us the beginning of life on our planet, but that is not the point of the opening. The grand introduction to Prometheus is a dissertation (of sorts) showing us just how they go about doing it. The Engineer uses a large concentration of black goo in order to carry out this process.
The black goo is a mutagen. If you digest it or contact it in anyway you will mutate. As the goo is highly unpredictable, and ALIEN in nature, it is unknown how it is controlled: whether it has a set design or is purely random. However if digested by a man (even the smallest amount) it will disintegrate the bodies frame and mutate the sperm. If the sperm fertilise the egg of a woman through the act of sex (before total mutation) it will create a "Starbeast" or "Body Hugger" this starfish like creature has a short life cycle and grows to a large size in order to overpower its host (most likely an Engineer) quickly.
The Starbeast (like the Facehugger) will need a host in order to lay an egg. If an host is impregnated, the embryo will grow to a massive size in a short period of time using resources from the innards of its host. This new creature (yet unnamed) is a distant cousin of the infamous Xenomorph despite only having a couple of similarities. Whether this new creature is fully grown, when seen at the end of the film, is unknown but I'm sure we'll find out soon.
It is unsure whether the Engineers saw this creature as a God but it is clear they respected it in some form, and from what we can gather, they had used this creature as a starting point, meddling with its DNA, to create something far more dangerous the Xenomorph.
The Engineers came to Earth several time during our species' history. They had explained to us where they had come from (obviously not betting on us getting there) and declared themselves as "Gods".
For whatever reason they stopped coming, but why? Had they got bored? Did they just leave us too it? Or did we scare them away? Well...
One theory is that we killed an Engineer around 2000 years ago, (whether this Engineer was Jesus is entirely up to you) as we became aware of our independence. We no longer needed a "God" and destroyed the creator. This pushed the Engineers too far, they were scared by what they created, and that alone forced them to try and terminate us.
They began construction on several "military bases" on LV_223. This is where they discovered the true potential of their black goo creating horrible creatures some of which they carved into the walls. This military base was guarded by urns that were cylindrical objects that would leak the black goo when an intruder was near. These urns could sense the area around them and lay dormant for thousands of years. This idea of a long lasting weapon would be the blueprint for the Xenomorph eggs that would essentially do the same job.
This "military base" was going well until something horrible happened and all of the Engineers were killed by something truly terrifying. Their own creation had turned on them. We can assume the creature seen at the very end of the film is the same type of alien that slaughtered the Engineers.
The ghost Engineers are seen running from an "infected" Engineer. The infected is then seen falling over letting a door decapitate it. The head is preserved perfectly as the door is closed, sealing the room. When the crew of the Prometheus remove the head and awaken the cells, the infection reboots and causes the head to explode.
The Engineers who were seen fleeing the infected Engineer go into the room where the giant head is, presumably hiding within another "tomb" (stated by Holloway) hidden behind this mural.
LV_223 is a barren wasteland with no indigenous lifeforms. The worms that mutate into the Hammerpedes were brought in on the boots of the Prometheus crew when their expedition entered the "military base." Although the Prometheus is a scientific research vessel, areas of the ship are not 100% sterile; the loading bay area for one. Also David 8 is scene picking up a worm that is crawling in the dining room when he is wandering the ship.
It is also unclear what the android David 8 says to the Engineer just before it kills most of the crew and Shaw. However given the Engineers were threatened by our race thousands of years before we discovered space travel, we can assume the Engineer was set on completing its 2000 year old mission, of destroying us all, when he awoke to see us standing there. This leads us to believe David said something along the lines of "my creators wish me to tell you that they have come in search of answers" if this was the case, the fact David admits he is an android scares the Engineer even further. Basically: they didn't realise that man would evolve to the same level as them, (creating life or becoming "Gods" ourselves.)
Some other smaller points:
• Shaw doesn't tell anyone about the starfish thing as she is convinced she has killed it. Also her boyfriend had just died AND she stumbles on Mr. Weyland alive and kicking in front of her. It's a lot it take in for one person.
• Milburn and Fiefield get lost because (although his "pups" mapped the caves) they simply couldn't remember the way out (breadcrumbs next time boys). By the time they get in contact with the Prometheus for help, a storm is over head and it's too late. They also seek safety in the urn room because, as far as they know, it's a harmless room away from the "ping."
• Milburn's curiosity as a biologist gets the better of him when face with the Hammerpede. It is clear he is fascinated by it and not scared. Maybe he was just scared of giant dead aliens not smaller snake aliens.
• Why David feeds some of the black goo to Holloway remains a mystery but I'm certain it was an order by Mr. Weyland to see the effects and a mix of David's own curiosity as an android.
• David could understand the Engineer's language on a basic level as he had studied all ancient languages from human history that probably derived from the Engineers themselves, as he said "I've studied languages right to their roots." He also learnt to use their technology from simply pressing things and imitating the Engineer holograms that he observed.
• Why is Vickers there? Well (as she says herself) she is simply a pretty face to oversee the scientist's discoveries before Mr. Weyland is awoken. That is all.
• One Engineer ship (still around 2000 years before Prometheus) was carrying the Xenomorph cargo (possibly to Earth) when it crashed on LV_426 after some of its cargo escaped and killed the pilot. A L I E N then follows. |
