FC United eye Newton Heath ground
Reuters - Thu, 25 Mar 13:36:00 2010

FC United of Manchester are seeking to build a new stadium in the Newton Heath suburb where 18-times English champions Manchester United were founded.

United, a semi-pro team established in 2005 after the American Glazer family took over the Old Trafford club, took a step closer this week to their dream of a ground in Newton Heath, where the Premier League behemoth first came to being over 140 years ago.

FC United passed the first stage en route to the new £3.5 million stadium in the Manchester suburb when the local council approved its business plan on Monday.

Manchester United, with home crowds of around 75,000 and a brand estimated to be worth around £1.5 billion, were formed as Newton Heath in 1878 before joining the Football League in 1892.

"You can't get away from the emotion of the location but this is as much about our future as the past and we are a club laying down our roots," FC United board member Jules Spencer told Reuters.

FC United play in front of an average of gate of 2,000 at Bury's Gigg Lane ground in the seventh tier of English football and Spencer said the ethos was to provide affordable matches and an antidote to the rampant commercialisation of the game.

"The ironic thing is the decision (to form the club) was made at a time of United's greatest successes, but there is a general malaise about the game not just about what the Glazers have done.

"We are trying to create a positive alternative for ordinary fans, we are not trying to claim the moral high ground.

"The vast majority of people watch their football through the television and that is something we want to change.”

The funding for the new ground will be raised through a community share issue, Spencer said, and the new 5,000 capacity ground has a 2012-2013 completion date.

The original green and gold colours of the Newton Heath club are being used as part of a separate fan campaign by Manchester United supporters (pictured) to protest at the Glazers' ownership.

A group of wealthy supporters known as the Red Knights have recently been linked with a takeover of the club, whose 2009 accounts showed it to be £507m in debt.

Premier League - Hargreaves to train with first team
PA Sport - Thu, 25 Mar 14:16:00 2010

Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves will not play for the reserves this week - because he will instead train with the first team.

The 29-year-old was scheduled to continue his comeback from major knee surgery with another appearance for the second string against Burnley at Accrington.

He played his first game for 18 months in the reserves against the Clarets last week but will not be joining Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

"Owen won't play for the reserves," manager Sir Alex Ferguson told the club website. "He's going to be training with the first team and we'll see where that takes him.

"We're keen to get him back involved because he's an experienced player and will be a valuable addition for us in the run-in, when having a strong, fit squad is vital."

Hargreaves is only eligible for the Premier League as he was not registered for the Champions League knockout phase because of uncertainty over his recovery.

Nani lands new deal

Manchester United is pleased to announce that Nani has signed a new four-year contract, keeping him at Old Trafford until at least June 2014.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Nani is an emerging talent within the team and has developed tremendously since joining the club.

"We are delighted he has signed a new contract and I am sure he will have a long and successful future here at Manchester United."

Nani, who signed for United in July 2007 from Sporting Lisbon, added: “I am delighted to have signed a new contract. It has been like a dream come true to play for Manchester United.

"The coaching staff have taught me so much about the game and I'm playing alongside some of the best players in the world.

"I'm looking forward to winning many more trophies with this team.”

Bolton vs Man United Player Ratings

Bolton

Jussi Jaaskalainen - 4.5

Gifted United their second goal by pushing it straight into the path of Dimitar Berbatov. Was not really called upon too often otherwise.

Zat Knight - 3.5

Suffered in the face of some slick United movement. Failed to help out Ricketts when Nani was torturing him - and flailed at the ball instead of calmly clearing it in pressure situations.

Gary Cahill - 5.5

It was a good first 45 minutes for the defender who was playing his first game after being out with a blot clot in his arm. United's trickery was too much for him in the second half though, and he lost track of Berbatov twice to allow the Bulgarian to score.

Jlloyd Samuel - 2

If he had scored the same goal at the other end of the pitch, he would have been hailed for a cool, calm finish As it was, he put the ball into his own net - when the right thing to do would have been to take a hefty swing and blast the ball to kingdom come. The own goal knocked the wind out of a Bolton side that had been flying until then.

Samuel Ricketts - 6.5

Was left flabbergasted by Nani's trickery twice, late in the game, but that should not deflect attention from the good work he put in before. Played well with Chung-yong Lee and gave Patrice Evra a torrid time on the left. Good in some good crosses for the likes of Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander.

Tamir Cohen - 4

Failed to close down the United midfield adequately - allowing the likes of Paul Scholes to take shots on goal from distance.

Fabrice Muamba - 5.5

The ex-Arsenal man certainly had his shooting boots on. Was unlucky to be denied one of the goals of the season by one of the saves of the season. Edwin van der Sar put on his cape and flew across goal to push the ball round the post.

Jack Wilshere - 7.5

Bolton's star player of the day. Picked out some stunning passes - cutting open a defence as accomplished as United's with impressive regularity. His movement off the ball was good as well - linking up with Elmander and Davies to keep United on their toes.

Chung-yong Lee - 7

The South Korean would probably have been a contortionist if he hadn't picked football as a career. Twisted and turned his way past a bemused Evra - allowing Ricketts to overlap and put in some good crosses.

Johan Elmander - 3

Failed to hold on to the ball, read his teammates passes and his passing was nothing to write home about either. Undid some excellent build-up play by the Bolton midfield in the first half.

Kevin Davies - 3

Was outplayed, or to be more accurate, outjumped by a superb Nemanja Vidic. Failed to win any balls in the air and did not have the skill to dribble his way past United's central defence. Looked increasingly isolated up top as United upped the tempo at the other end.

Subs

Ivan Klasnic - n.a

Matthew Taylor - n.a

Manchester United

Edwin van der Sar - 8

Prevented a potentially big upset by pulling off two stunning saves in the first half.

Nemanja Vidic - 9

United's player of the match. Strangled Kevin Davies superbly and took over the mantle of senior defender in the absence of Rio Ferdinand. Helped out Jonny Evans time and again - and his excellent anticiaption played a big part in  United not conceding on the night.

Jonathan Evans - 6

Needed some assistance from Vidic occasionally but did a good job of keeping Johan Elmander quiet.

Patrice Evra - 6

Was given a very tough time by the duo of Lee and Ricketts. Rarely got forward in the first half but grew in stature in the second-half - pumping in some good crosses and getting in behind the defenders regularly.

Gary Neville - 5.5

Did not have much to do as Vidic simply dominated the back-line.

Paul Scholes - 6.5

Revelled in the space he was allowed in midfield - firing off shots and forcing Bolton defenders to put their bodies on the line. Set Fletcher up nicely for a few shots as well.

Darren Fletcher - 6

Like his partner Scholes, Fletcher enjoyed himself in the midfield. Warmed his boots with some thundering shots on goal. Showed excellent close control and dazzled with some neat one-twos with Berbatov.

Ryan Giggs - 5.5

Did not really feature in the game as most of United's attacks came via Nani or Valencia on the wings. He did play one great pass to Fletcher that led to United's second goal.

Nani - 8

His showboating leaves supporters frustrated at times but today the midfielder was on fire. . Nani set up two goals and made sure Berbatov received some quality supply througout the match.

Antonio Valencia - 6

Uncharacteristically lost the ball with some heavy touches and the quality of his crosses was not as good either. Perhaps he was missing Wayne Rooney. As always though, the Ecuadorian brushed past defenders with ease - and opened up possibilities for United on the right.

Dimitar Berbatov - 8

Who needs Wayne Rooney when Berbatov is on fire - like he was against Bolton. Put in the common man's hard yards and also exhibited some truly royal touches. Got in right amongst the defenders and was rewarded for his initiative with two goals.

Subs

Michael Carrick - n.a

Darron Gibson - 6

Was the beneficiary of some excellent play by Nani and did not fail to blast home a simple chance.

Federico Macheda - n.a

Fergie plays down Rooney injury
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson does not think the ankle injury suffered by Wayne Rooney against Bayern Munich is "terribly serious".

The England striker was injured in the build up to Bayern's late winner as Ivica Olic made it 2-1 to the German giants.

Rooney had put United in front after just 64 seconds at the Allianz Arena before he deflected in Franck Ribery's 77th-minute free-kick which drew the sides level.

Ferguson said: "He's obviously hurt his ankle, we'll know better tomorrow. It's too early to say. I don't think it's terribly serious, but we'll wait and see."

Asked if he could feature against Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday, Ferguson added: "I can't answer that, we need to wait until tomorrow."
