Barcelona 3-0 Athletic Bilbao

BARCELONA, February 25 (Primera Liga) - Samuel Eto'o was back with a goal for Barcelona as the Catalans returned to winning ways against Athletic Bilbao at the Camp Nou on Sunday.

The Cameroonian striker played a key role in Barcelona's first two goals - a Fernando Amorebieta own goal and a brilliant Xavi effort - before scoring the third himself and leaving to a standing ovation in the second half.

Eto'o made his comeback from a serious knee injury earlier this month as a late substitute in the game against Osasuna in Pamplona, but was left out of the squad by coach Frank Rijkaard for the games against Valencia and Liverpool last week after his supposed refusal to go on as a substitute versus Racing Santander two weeks ago.

Rijkaard told reporters after that match that the African had refused to play, although Eto'o later denied this and called his coach a ``bad person''.

The player was left out of the squad for the games against Valencia and Liverpool, but Rijkaard decided to recall his forward after the team slipped to back-to-back defeats in those matches.

Rijkaard claimed Eto'o was ``ready to help the team'' and named the African in his starting lineup for the visit of struggling Athletic.

The Dutch coach also kept faith with the much-criticised Ronaldinho on the left, while Frenchman Ludovic Giuly came in for Lionel Messi on the right side of the team's three-man attack.

Ronaldinho determined to shake off fat jibes

Photos of the 26-year-old showing a roll of fat around his waistband after he had taken off his shirt at the end of Wednesday's 2-1 Champions League defeat to Liverpool, have sparked a heated debate about the Brazilian's weight and form.

Newspapers in both Madrid and Barcelona made comparisons about Ronaldinho's apparent loss of fitness by publishing photos of the forward taken in 2003 and 2004 in which he appeared to be leaner and more muscular.

But having put on a scintillating display in the Nou Camp on Sunday, the Brazilian stripped to the waist at the end of the match and jokingly challenged pitchside photographers to snap him.

'I don't have anything to hide. I always change shirts with the other players,' Ronaldinho told reporters.

'Over the last week photos have come out insinuating I'm fat but I feel fine. I have always looked after myself and am in better shape then ever. With everything that has been said recently I was motivated to play even better.'

In the first half against Bilbao, Ronaldinho was involved in the build up for the second goal, scored by Xavi, and set up returning Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o for the third.

After the break, only the woodwork prevented Ronaldinho from adding to his 16 league goals this season.

The photos of a shirtless Ronaldinho on the front of Monday's newspapers were more flattering.

Ferguson - Barca facing tough task

Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed Champions League holders Barcelona face a `near impossible' task to overhaul their first-leg deficit against Liverpool at Anfield next week.

Liverpool have been virtually impregnable on home soil this term, with only Arsenal able to beat them in both domestic cup competitions.

And Ferguson feels Barcelona will find it incredibly difficult to avoid tumbling out of the competition and offering increased hope for the rest of the contenders for Europe's most prestigious club prize.

'If Barcelona win at Liverpool they will be favourites but they face an almost impossible task to win at Anfield,' Ferguson told Gazzetta dello Sport.

'If they are eliminated, all the rest of the teams, like AC Milan, Inter or ourselves, can point to the final.'

FC Sevilla 2-1 Barcelona

SEVILLE, March 4, (Primera Liga) - Sevilla leapfrogged Barcelona to go top of the Primera Liga on Saturday after a brilliant comeback in their top-of-the-table clash with the European champions at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

The Andalusians went a goal down and then a man down against the Catalan outfit - Aitor Ocio the player dismissed - but produced a stunning revival to displace the Spanish champions at the summit after 25 matches.

Ronaldinho put Barcelona ahead early on, but goals from Russian striker Aleksander Kerzakhov and Brazilian full-back Daniel Alves gave Sevilla a precious victory which could prove crucial in the title run-in.

Barca finished with just nine men following the second-half dismissals of Ludovic Giuly and Gianluca Zambrotta, the former particularly unfortunate.

Iniesta preparing for 'war' at Anfield

Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta admits the team have to be prepared for another 'war' in Tuesday`s Champions League clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

The club surrendered top spot in the Primera Liga with a 2-1 defeat against Sevilla last night.

That was only their fourth league defeat of the season, but Iniesta believes they need to put it behind them quickly and prepare for their second 'war' when they go to Anfield.

Liverpool are 2-1 ahead after the first leg of the last-16 Champions League clash.

'The league is not decided in one game, but we have to continue fighting,' said the Spain international. 'On Tuesday we have another war.'

Barca looked to be in total control against Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium after taking a 14th-minute lead through Ronaldinho and then winning a penalty in the 27th minute, in an incident that also saw home defender Aitor Ocio sent off.

But Ronaldinho missed the chance to make it 2-0 as Andres Palop saved his spot-kick, and the 10 men of Sevilla bounced back to draw level just before the break through striker Alexander Kerzhakov.

Sevilla then stunned their opponents by going 2-1 ahead on the hour-mark when Daniel Alves rifled home a free-kick, before Barca were reduced to nine men with the dismissals of Ludovic Giuly and Gianluca Zambrotta.

Barca goalkeeper Victor Valdes, whose side would have have gone five points clear at the summit with a victory, said: 'It was a good opportunity to gain an advantage, but now they are ahead.

'Now we have to focus on the game we will play on Tuesday, which is going to be a very tough match.'

Ronaldinho added: 'We have started very well, but after that we have lost a little rhythm and have lost the opportunity.

'I have failed with the penalty which could have sent us on the way to victory. Palop looked as though he was going to jump one way, but then he jumped the other.'

Argentinian playmaker Lionel Messi also believes they need to put this game behind them and look ahead to an important week, where after the Liverpool match they then host arch-rivals Real Madrid in the league next weekend.

'The first half we have had everything in our favour, but 45 minutes later everything has gone away,' he said. 'It is a pity, but it is has gone and we have to forget it.'

that's da spirit...

Rijkaard tries to turn the pressure on Liverpool

MADRID, March 5 (Reuters) - Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard is hoping that the favourites tag will weigh heavily on opponents Liverpool when the two sides meet at Anfield in the return leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday.

Defending champions Barcelona lost 2-1 at home two weeks ago and face an uphill task if they are to turn the tie around and make the quarter-finals.

'Everyone, including all their fans, think they are already through and so they will be under a lot more pressure than us,' the Dutchman told daily Sport on Monday.
'We committed some errors in our own stadium and I think we now need to take the pressure off ourselves if we are to play well. We have the necessary quality and talent to pull off a surprise.'
Rijkaard said his side's 2-1 defeat at title rivals Sevilla on Saturday could also help them in their bid to turn the tables on Liverpool.

'Liverpool play in a similar style to Sevilla and their mentality is the same too, so I think the defeat will help us.'
Midfielder Andres Iniesta was upbeat about his side's chances of making the last eight.
'We are all confident that we can turn this round,' he was quoted as saying by daily Mundo Deportivo. 'The only thing we have got in our heads is that we need to score twice.
'If we can score early on we will be within a goal of going through. We're optimistic.'
