Player Ratings: Barcelona - Real Madrid
Barcelona
Victor Valdes: 8 - The much maligned keeper turned in one of the best performances of his career to keep Barcelona in the game when all the odds were stacked against them. Huge display!
Oleguer: 3 - It was shambolic, to put it straight - be it the clumsy trailing leg that tripped Guti in the area, or the shocking barge into Gago. He got sent off for just two bad fouls, but can only blame himself for giving the referee the chance.
Thuram: 5 - Made a hash of a clearance to tee the ball up for Van Nistelrooy to give Real Madrid a 5th minute lead. Looked ill at ease in the first half, but improved just enough in the second after Barcelona went a man down.
Puyol: 5.5 - Did not make big mistakes like the other two, but could have done better against Sergio Ramos when the Madrid man scored his header.
Marquez: 4 - The Mexican skipper's season simply refuses to take off. The stunning displays from the World Cup and before seem light years away now.
Iniesta: 5.5 - Was pinned back with defensive responsibilities for most of the game, but did get involved in the flow every now and again. His input is one of the main things Barcelona have lost as a result of this three man defence.
Xavi: 6.5 - Kept running throughout the game, trying to provide as much cover as he could for a very shaky defence. Was his usual crisp self when Barcelona went on the attack, though he did not see enough of the ball in the second half.
Deco: 6 - Provided some kep passes for the forwards to work on, and worked his socks off trying to defend - almost earning a second yellow for his efforts.
Messi: 8.5 - It was one of the most sensational of El Clasico displays. Surprisingly clinical finishing from the youngster, though he could have done much better when hitting the side netting from close range in the first half. |

Fergie: Ron's the one that got away
Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he does sometimes rue the day that Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho turned his back on Manchester United.
The brilliant Brazilian is due to appear at Old Trafford on Tuesday - almost four years after he should have arrived on a permanent basis.
When he set off for the pre-season USA tour in 2003, Ferguson believed the deal had been done.
By the time he landed in Portland, the transfer had unravelled and Ronaldinho had opted to join Barcelona.
"I do think what might have been when I look at Ronaldinho," said the Scot.
"We thought the agreement with him was done until some events changed the course of history.
"But the good thing about Manchester United is that the club does not stop just because one player says 'no', or we fail to get him.
"We thought we had Paul Gascoigne but he changed his mind and went to Tottenham, so we signed Paul Ince and he was fantastic for us.
"Likewise, we tried to get David Hurst and Alan Shearer and ended up with Eric Cantona. What can I say about that?
"Something always turns up. Football is amazing like that. We did not get Ronaldinho but out of that came Cristiano Ronaldo."

THE MODEST STAR Striker Lionel Messi, who like Samuel Eto抩 recently returned from a three-month absence (broken left foot), kept a straight face during a news conference last Sunday at the Camp Nou when a reporter compared him to the Argentine great Diego Maradona.
揟here is only one Maradona,擺/color] he said. 揑 always want to carry on learning, and yesterday I was lucky enough to score three goals. But it would have been nicer if we had won. |

Rijkaard Hopeful Over Barca Stars
[quote]Frank Rijkaard is hopeful that AC Milan target Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o will stay at Barcelona.
Media reports in Spain have spoken of the "end of a cycle" at Barcelona, and Ronaldinho has been strongly linked with a move to the San Siro.
But Rijkaard is optimistic of keeping the Brazilian, along with the rest of his top players.
When the stars are committed to the club, there's no need to shake things up too much," he said. "Barcelona doesn't need a revolution.
"Hopefully Ronaldinho and Eto'o will stay at Barca. I think the players are happy here. I hope the big names stay.
"Ronaldinho has put in a lot of work for the team, above all when Eto'o and Messi were injured. He has decided a lot of games. Of course he is going to go through a bad spells, but even then he has scored a lot of goals. The moment is yet to come when he is at the top of his game and feels at his physical peak."
It was reported in the Italian press that AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi is prepared to offer Barcelona a massive |

Eto'o double as Barcelona hit fourMADRID, Spain (Reuters) -- Two goals from Samuel Eto'o helped put Barcelona three points clear at the top of the Primera Liga after crushing Recreativo Huelva 4-0 on Saturday.
The Cameroon striker looked back to his best after injury, scoring either side of a Gianluca Zambrotta goal in the first half. Lionel Messi added a fourth at the end as Barca cruised to their first away league win in eight attempts.
The champions have 53 points from 27 games, three ahead of second-placed Sevilla who host Celta Vigo on Sunday.
Valencia's title challenge suffered a setback after a 2-0 home defeat by Racing Santander left them third on 47 points.
Racing's Nikola Zigic nodded down for Pedro Munitis to acrobatically volley the opener after 20 minutes against a Valencia side off the pace throughout.
Defender Oriol's header from a second-half corner sealed the win for Racing, who climbed to eighth on 40 points.
Real Madrid, fourth with 45, host relegation-threatened Gimnastic at the Bernabeu on Sunday when fifth-placed Real Zaragoza also entertain Atletico Madrid, who are sixth.
Barca made a flying start in Huelva when Eto'o caught keeper Javier Lopez Vallejo flat-footed with a swerving shot from outside the area after three minutes.
That goal set up the rest of the match as the visitors played almost at walking pace, dominating possession.
Although Recre hit the post midway through the half, a superb move in the 40th minute put Italian defender Zambrotta clear to dink the ball over the keeper. Two minutes later, Silvinho's deep cross from the left was volleyed in at the far post by Eto'o.
Recre's Nigerian striker Ikechukwu Uche threatened intermittently after the break as Barca eased off.
But four minutes from time Argentine forward Messi stole the ball and streaked across the edge of the area past three defenders to bury a shot in the far corner. |
