Rossi ungguli GP Belanda

Motor Racing: Fairuz gets best qualifying position in two years
By : ARNAZ M. KHAIRUL

FAIRUZ Fauzy didn抰 get what he wanted, but his best qualifying position in two years which placed him fourth on the grid in Round Four of the Formula Renault 3.5 World Series at the Hungaroring yesterday, must surely make the Malaysian inspired.

In fact, Cram Competition driver Fairuz was second fastest in Group B of the 34 entries running the second of two qualifying heats, clocking one minute 32.676 seconds on the 4.381km circuit near Budapest in Hungary.

KTR抯 French driver Guillaume Moreau took pole position with a time of 1:31.862s, while Alvaro Barba of the Draco team, who topped the Group B heats, took the second spot on the front row..

Fairuz will share the second row at the start of Race One today with Basque driver Filipe Albuquerque of the Epsilon Euskadi who registered the third fastest time overall of 1:32.346s.

"I was initially leading my qualifying heat but Barba beat my best time in the last five minutes of the session. I went out and tried to better that time, but a red flag in the last five minutes dampened my effort," said Fairuz.

"The qualifying session was ended early, five minutes ahead of the scheduled end. But I am still satisfied with my result and my confidence is growing. I hope the good going thus far will continue into race day."

Spyker F1 test driver Fairuz, started the weekend on a high, with mechanical problems that had bogged him down in the first three races seeming to have been sorted out as he blasted a second fastest time in the first practice session on Thursday.

He continued that way in the second session and ended Thursday with a time ranked fourth fastest overall, which he bettered in Friday抯 third practice session when he was ranked second fastest.

"With temperatures expected to be around 35 degrees Celsius, it's going to be a hot race. We have solved many problems with the car and it looks like everything has been going smoothly thus far. We must now maintain this and keep improving," said Fairuz.

There also seemed to be a reverse in fortunes, as championship leader and BMW-Sauber F1 driver Sebastian Vettel only managed a sixth fastest qualifying time.

Fairuz, who is currently 19th in the championship with a single-point scored from the fastest lap he registered in the opening round, looks able to mount a serious challenge for a podium finish.

Motor Racing: Jazeman slower in Sentul
By : ARNAZ M. KHAIRUL

BATTLING on unfamiliar territory, Jazeman Firhan Jaafar抯 limited knowledge of the Sentul Circuit saw him managing only third fastest in the Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS) practice session yesterday.

The Malaysian teenager found himself trailing the more experienced Formula BMW campaigners.

Malaysia抯 CIMB Team Qi-Meritus still gained the upper hand over the rest of the pack as Jazeman抯 teammate and main rival James Grunwell of Thailand recorded the fastest time over two practice sessions on the 3.965-kilometre Sentul Circuit in Bogor.

Apart from Grunwell, Jazeman, the Formula BMW Asia championship leader, will also have to contend with Indonesian favourite Zahir Ali of Malaysian team Tara-DTM. Zahir proved to be faster than Jazeman yesterday.

Jazeman's fastest time of one minute 34.239 seconds was more than half a second behind Zahir's second fastest time of 1:33.696s, while Grunwell topped the time charts yesterday with a time of 1:33.645s. But Jazeman抯 time topped the evening practice session.

"The main thing is, I enjoyed my first experience at this circuit, particularly the quick corners and those which needed heavy braking. This should provide some spectacular racing tomorrow (today)," said Jazeman.

While this could spell the end of Jazeman's dominant start to the season in which he won five out of eight races that were held at the Sepang Cicuit, he is looking more positive as the finer points of the Sentul circuit sink into him.

Two of the four rounds in Formula BMW Asia will follow qualifying today, with two more races set for tomorrow.

Jazeman enters the weekend leading the championship with 339 points while Grunwell is second with 274 points.
