From Trucial States to United Arab Emirates By Franke Heard-Bey.
The eminence of Dubai as successful commercial city is truly mind boggling. I would rather call Dubai an anti-thesis. It should not be there or would ever be.
I have never been to the Middle East or it's the last place I want to be. Fate played a strange trick and it was the distant calling that brought me to exotic Dubai recently.
I only had a distant glimpse of Dubai and United Arab Emirates. Two things stood out in my mind about the region- they have plenty of f鵦king oil and plenty of war. To unlock the mystery I went to the Borders in Dubai's Mall of the Emirates and picked the book by Franke Heard-Bey.
The U.A.E. did not even exist as a nation-state until as recently as 1971, and it was one of the last two Gulf countries in which oil was found in sufficient quantities to make this development possible.
To read a 500-page of the story of the U.A.E. is a monumental task. But Dr. Heard-Bey has accomplished the task with distinction. She looks back to the earliest stage of the history of the region, and traces the development of tribal groups, both nomadic and sedentary, from before the advent of Islam up to the present day. Throughout the 1400 years of the Islamic era the tribal government retained its character despite the invasions of outsiders, who brought quite different cultures but made little if any impact on the way of life of the inhabitants.
Very outstanding book. |

Hi! red. Nice to be back...
George Orwell was in Burma serving as a policeman ...I think
I read his essays in 'The Burmese Days' many years ago. Stunning.
Talking about Burma try this title ' THE GLASS PALACE' by Amitav Ghosh. A very extraordinary epic.
qoute " ....a masterful novel of love, war and family....spread across Burma, Malaya and India...across 3 generations before the door to Burma closes behind them" unquote |

guess what, i bought 'The Glass Palace' when it first came out and that is the book responsible for all this Burmese fetish of mine.
i tell u, i've got a collection of Burmese-theme novels... try The Piano Tuner by Daniel Mason. very captivating! simple and honest
probably when things are better, i might travel there as well. nak tgk shwedagon temple (the gold-plated temple) and the relics of the glass palace.
dah, mule i merepek/berangan pasal Burma dah ni.... |
