i do like the smell of books.that's the reason why i buy the actual book instead of using my nook.the smell also is caused by the presence of lignin, which is present in wood and therefore paper, and one component of artificial vanilla.so you could say that lignin smell for something more precise than musty.

what makes books smell good?

according to science, the truth is that books smell good for the same reason you can get high from sniffing glue.in both cases the odor (and kick) you feel comes from a bouquet of different volatile organic compounds or vocs.these compounds come from the adhesives used to tie the books together, from the ink used to write the text, as well as from various byproducts that form as the cellulose fibers and the supporting network of lignin in the paper start to break down.because those last byproducts only form gradually over time, the smell of a book will also slowly change until you get that slightly sweet and musty old book smell.

additional info : the first part, with the volatile organic compounds, is also what creates the new car smell.the adhesives used are out gassing as they age.

Only for new books. Old books in my collection are usually dusty, I wouldn’t want to smell all the dust instead.

I love to smell books.
When I was young, I had this habit of smelling Enid blyton books.
So whenever I find some hardcover novel books, I will sniff the books and get transported back to my childhood days.

. It’s a remembrance of things past
The smell of books might actually remind you of things. The olfactory bulb is part of the brain’s limbic system, which is associated with memories and feelings. When you first smell a new scent, your brain links the smell with an event, a person, a thing, or a moment. When you smell the same scent again, your brain conjures up the linked memory. It may not always be an explicit memory, it could just be an emotion or a feeling.
