Boston braces for rival protests a week after Charlottesville.


Officials in Boston, Massachusetts, are bracing for confrontations as rival protests converge on the city centre.

The organisers of the conservative "Free Speech Rally" said they would not offer a platform to racism or bigotry.

Hundreds of counter-protesters have surrounded a fenced-off area on Boston Common and are being held back by police.

Tensions are high after violent demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend turned deadly.

Police were investigating reports that some radical counter-protesters were planning to throw acid at rally supporters and even police, a law enforcement official told the Boston Globe.

The BBC's Aleem Maqbool at the scene says only a handful of people have turned up for the conservative rally and are confined to the bandstand area on Boston Common.

Hundreds of anti-racism protesters are totally surrounding the bandstand but are being kept some distance away by police barriers, he adds.

Another anti-racist protest was being held about two miles away and those protesters were reported to be marching towards the common.
