Earlier this year, a company called oBike launched their services in Malaysia, introducing a much needed eco-friendly ride sharing service. The bike-sharing application, requires its users to download a mobile app to rent bicycles easily.

Part of the allure of using an oBike is the fact that users do not have to worry about parking the oBike at any designated area, as the oBike can be left in any open area and other users can locate it using the app.

Although the bike-sharing app is a hit in other countries such as Amsterdam, London and New York, sadly the same can't be said here in Malaysia, as people have been reportedly vandalising the bikes.

Over the weekend, a Facebook posting from Rizal Hakimm went viral, after he showed netizens the sad state some oBikes are left in after being used.

Some of it were thrown into drains and bushes, left in hidden places in housing areas, and even hanging from signboards.

And even more disheartening, some of the bikes were not only left in inappropriate places, some were vandalised as well. Some pictures revealed the oBikes in a pitiful state, with missing pedals, handles, and even tyres.

After Rizal Hakimm’s posting went viral, netizens surely had a lot to say about the incident. Most of them agreed the incident shows the apparent third class mentality of Malaysian citizens.

"Some Malaysians still have lower class mentalities. The oBikes are destroyed from being thrown around. Located near Jalan Ampang, KL," said the Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force (MyWatch) said through their Twitter.

Some netizens have called for oBike to stop their services in Malaysia, citing the Malaysian mentality that is not up to par with developed countries yet.

However, others, pointed their fingers towards the immigrants in the country.

In order to get to the bottom of this issue, Malaysian Digest contacted an oBike representative to get their thoughts on the matter, and how they plan to combat this issue.

"We are aware of these incidents and are appalled by these senseless acts.

“We have reported these cases to the police for investigations, and we believe that further actions will soon be taken to send out a strong message and deter similar incidents in future," Elaine Chan, oBike's Marketing Manager, told Malaysian Digest.

When asked regarding measures that might be taken in response to these incidents, Elaine shared that oBike has a built-in system to prevent vandalism and abuse of their bikes.

"oBike has a Credits Scoring System which aims to educate and encourage positive riding behaviour, while disincentivising users from improper or irresponsible riding behaviour.

“We also educate our users on the correct ways to use oBike across our communication channels," she further explained.

And luckily, the recent incident is not discouraging them from continuing their much-needed service.

"oBike was created with the mission to provide a convenient, environmentally-friendly mode of transportation in Malaysia and we are committed to working closely with the local authorities, so that we can continue to educate and reach out to public in encouraging civic-mindedness among riders, aiming to create a pleasant cycling culture and experience for Malaysia," stressed Elaine.

She also added that there are no plans to pull the bikes from 'at-risk' locations as the deployment of bikes are based on supply and demand.

Although oBike has stated that they are planning to continue their service even in the face of such actions, the deplorable acts might still turn them away if it keeps reoccurring.

So we at Malaysian Digest would like to urge everyone to help look out for the oBikes, and keep them in good condition.
