Tempeh to be proposed as UNESCO cultural heritage

The popular Indonesian food tempeh will be proposed as an intangible world cultural heritage to UNESCO in 2021 (Arif Relano Oba)

Tempeh will be proposed as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in 2021.

Made Astawan, head of the Indonesian Tempeh Forum, said tempeh must first be acknowledged as a national cultural heritage.

“We are grateful that tempeh was recognized by the government of Indonesia as a national cultural heritage last October. It convinced us to aim for UNESCO 2021 to attain international recognition,” he told Tempo on Tuesday.

Astawan said with tempeh on the UNESCO’S cultural heritage list, Indonesians, especially creative young people, will bring more innovations to popular food.

“Since batik was recognized by UNESCO in 2009, the young generation has shown a great interest in wearing batik,” he said.

He expressed hope that Indonesian youths would become more enthusiastic about eating tempeh, seeing that it is widely served in hotels, included in in-flight meals, and has been accepted in countries such as Japan, United Kingdom and the United States.

He felt certain that tempeh would be accepted by UNESCO as an admission from Indonesia even though it was also proposed by another country.

“We provide strong evidence, namely in the Serat Centhini tales that states tempeh has been around since the 16th century,” he added.

Astawan said Indonesians must be able to produce good-quality tempeh to fit international standards.

“Making tempeh is easy and inexpensive, but the difficult step is meeting the standard. So we must improve our production means, such as by wearing gloves or using stainless steel drums instead of used ones,” he said.

Agustinus Ngadiman, a lecturer at Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University’s School of Education, said tempeh deserved to be a world cultural heritage seeing its long existence.

“Tempeh is always used as a symbol of tradition. In Yogyakarta and Sleman, it is a part of tumpeng (a cone-shaped serving of yellow rice with assorted side dishes) at special events,” he said.

Presently, only around 30 percent of soybean comes from local farmers, while 70 percent is imported. Ngadiman expressed hope that the government would take a more active role in tempeh production, for instance by improving local soybean production to reduce the country’s reliance on imported soybean. jepun dah lama dpt patent proses hasil tempe depa... dah nama makanan sifat universal.... nak gaduh watpe....
blah thai vietnam myanmar nun seme mknan mesti ade sos ikan...sotong tuh..... sibuk yindon nak klaim..... dah depa pun sibuk klaim popia la apa la.... pdhl bkn origin indon pun....

... kami Malon tak ingin pun pegi daftar, tiada untung dan tiada rugi pun ..... kalau Indon daftar pun, Unesco hanya akan akui sebagai "INDONESIAN TEMPEH", dan bukan sebagai "TEMPEH" ... so kalau negara lain macam Singapore nak daftar pun boleh sebagai "SINGAPORE TEMPEH" ...

Sama kes macam batik kelnarin, Unesco hanya akui sebagai "INDONESIAN BATIK" aje,bukan sebagai "BATIK", negara lain macam India boleh daftar sebagai "INDIAN BATIK" ... BODOH indon nih
