Richards romps to 400m glory

STUTTGART: Golden League jackpot winner Sanya Richards put in another commanding performance as the American picked up her third consecutive World Athletics Final win in the 400m here on Sunday.

The 22-year-old, who picked up US$ 500,000 after this season's six Golden League wins, beat a strong field including British world champion Christine Ohuruogu for the second time in a week after last weekend's triumph in Berlin.

Richards equalled her own world-leading time of 49.27 and left world bronze medallist Jamaica's Novlene Williams in second as Ohuruogu came third.

揑 really wanted to run sub-49 today but I guess 49.2 is not so bad,

Failed the mark, but in the Games
By AFTAR SINGH

KUALA LUMPUR: The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) selection committee named 12 athletes who failed the SEA Games qualifying mark under category A for the Korat Games in December.

Among them was Manila SEA Games 100m hurdles gold medallist Moh Siew Wei, as well as sprinter sprinter Siti Fatimah Mohamed (100m, 4x100m), Vally Michael (800m, 4x400m) and N. Shivaneetha (800m, 4x400m).

The men's athletes are Manila Games 400m hurdler gold medallist Shahadan Jamaludin, Danial Azuan Amar Nand (200m), Mohd Jironi Ridzuan (800m, 1,500m), Ahmad Firdaus (triple jump), Josbert Tinus (long jump), Adi Aliffudin Hussin (shot putt), Shaharudin Hashim and Chan Yew Woo (marathon).

OCM will bear the cost for athletes under category A.

Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) programme co-ordinator for the SEA Games C. Ramanathan said that they were happy with the OCM approach of giving an opportunity to borderline case athletes to compete under category A.

"This is the first time so many athletes who failed to beat the qualifying mark are going under category A. I hope these athletes will go all out to win medals to show their appreciation to OCM," he said.

Only 11 men and six women athletes have qualified on merit for the Games.

SEA Games: OCM put 12 non-qualifiers in Category A
By AFTAR SINGH

KUALA LUMPUR: Hurdler Moh Siew Wei is among 12 non-qualifiers in track and field who will get to compete in the SEA Games in Korat as Category A athletes.

The other female athletes who failed to meet second-place marks of the last Games in Manila are sprinter Siti Fatimah Mohamed (100m, 4x100m), Vally Michael (800m, 4x400m) and N. Shivaneetha (800m, 4x400m).

The men are Shahadan Jamaludin (400m hurdles), Danial Azuan Amar Nand (200m), Mohd Jironi Ridzuan (800m, 1,500m), Ahmad Firdaus (triple jump), Josbert Tinus (long jump), Adi Aliffudin Hussin (shot putt), Shaharudin Hashim and Chan Yew Woo (marathon).

Joyful: Hurdler Shahadan Jamaludin is among the athletes who get to compete under Category A despite failing to qualify for the Games.

Siew Wei and Shahadan were the gold medallists at the 2005 Manila Games.

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) will bear the costs of Category A athletes to compete in the Games.

The Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) programme co-ordinator for the SEA Games, C. Ramanathan, said that they were happy with the OCM consent to include borderline cases as Category A athletes in the contingent.

揟his is the first time that so many athletes who failed to beat the qualifying mark get to go under Category A. I hope these athletes will go all out to win medals to show their appreciation to the OCM,'' he said.

Only 11 men and six women qualified on merit for the Games.

The men are Lee Hup Wei and Ahmad Najwan Aqra (high jump); Rayzam Shah Wan Sufian (110m hurdles); Mohd Shahrulhaizy Abdul Rahman, Lo Choong Sieng and B. Thirukumaran (20km walk); M. Vadivellan (800m, 1,500m) and the 4x100m team.

Only two walkers will get to go to Korat and selection will be based on their results in the Thailand Open next week.

Manila SEA Games 110m hurdles gold medallist Mohd Robani Hassan has also beaten the qualifying mark but his place in the Games is not confirmed yet.

Ramanathan said that Robani did not compete in the MAAU Closed in Perlis early this month because of a knee injury and his place in the Games would depend on how Manila Games silver medallist Mohd Faiz Mohamed fared in Thailand.

The women who met the qualifying marks are hurdler Noraseela Khalid, triple jumper Ngew Sin Mei, walker Yuan Yufang, pole vaulter Roslinda Samsu and hammer throwers Siti Shahida Abdullah and Tan Song Hwa.

The OCM included five men and five women athletes under Category B.

The men are Mohd Syahrul Amri Mohd Suhaimi (long jump), Mohd Faizal Mustafa (decathlon), S. Narendran (200m, 4x400m), S. Vikkram (3,000m steeplechase) and Mohd Hafizudin Sahadan (pole vault). The women are Azizah Ibrahim (100m hurdles), Yap Jen Tzan (discus), Norliyana Kamaruddin (high jump), Siti Zubaidah Adabi (triple jump, long jump) and Yap Kwee Kee (20km walk).

A Category B athlete is funded by his association, who will then get a reimbursement from the OCM if he returns with at least the silver medal.

Cuban long jumper Pedroso retires

HAVANA: Cuba's 2000 Olympic men's long jump champion Ivan Pedroso has announced his retirement, newspaper Juventud Rebelde reported here on Wednesday.

Pedroso, who turns 35 in December, won his specialist event in Sydney and also took the world title four consecutive times between 1995 and 2001.

He won five consecutive world indoor gold medals between 1993 and 2001 and also made the Olympic Games long jump final in 1992, 1996 and 2004 but didn't take a medal.

He first came to international attention as a teenager in 1992 when he leapt 8.53m, the third furthest performance in the world that year. In recent years though, he has been plagued by injuries.

Third time lucky for Sabah high jumper Josbert

KUALA LUMPUR: After twice failing to earn a place in the SEA Games, long jumper Josbert Tinus finally got his big break by getting the chance to compete in the Korat Games in December.

The 27-year-old Sabahan, however, failed to beat the SEA Games qualifying mark of 7.69m but was given the nod by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) selection committee to compete under category A.

Josbert抯 personal best of 7.66m, which he did in the Perak Open in July missed the qualifying mark by three centimetres.

Josbert, a navy corporal in Lumut, said that he was surprised to be named in the squad.

揑 failed to beat the mark but was given the chance to compete in the Games. This is the best news of my athletics career as I have been trying to win a place since 2003,

Gay beaten, Liu Xiang suffers same fate in Shanghai Grand Prix

SHANGHAI: Wallace Spearmon upset rusty speed king Tyson Gay in the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix yesterday while superstar hurdler Liu Xiang also crashed to defeat, fading to third behind Cuba's Dayron Robles.

World 100m and 200m champion Gay blasted out of the blocks and was leading at 80m before US teammate Spearmon found another gear to edge him on the line in 9.96 seconds.

Too bad: Liu Xiang (left) of China races to the finish line with Dayron Robles of Cuba in the men's 110m hurdles during the Golden Grand Prix in Shanghai yesterday. Robles won with a time of 13.01 while Liu finished third with a time of 13.21.

Gay, a training partner and close friend of Spearmon's, clocked 10.02 with Jamaica's Michael Frater third.

揑'm very excited about this performance. Last year I ran a personal best here and this year I've done the same,

Gay denies Powell snub

SHANGHAI: World champion Tyson Gay denied shooting down a 100m rematch with arch-rival Asafa Powell after limping into second place at the Golden Grand Prix here.

Gay, a triple sprint champion at the Osaka world championships, crawled home in 10.02 seconds to finish behind training partner Wallace Spearmon's 9.96 on Friday.

Meanwhile, 100m world record holder Powell, who said he was barred from the race here, looked in peak form as he blitzed the 200m just short of his personal best.

But Gay denied assertions by Powell's camp that he had vetoed a rematch with the Jamaican.

揘o, I didn't even know he was coming here,
