Chinese facing shortage of wives
China will have 30 million more men of marriageable age than women by 2020, making it difficult for them to find wives, according to a national report.

The gender imbalance could lead to social instability, the report by the State Population and Family Planning Commission warned.

It found that around 118 boys were born to every 100 girls in 2005.

A traditional preference for boys, in a country with a one-child policy, is the root of the problem, the report says.

Abortions on female foetuses are believed to be widespread as couples, particularly in rural areas, hope for a son who will look after them in their old age.

There is also suspected under-reporting of female births.

'Embrace girls'

The report said the 118 to 100 ratio of newborn boys to girls had jumped from 110 to 100 recorded in 2000.

In some areas of southern China, such as Guangdong and Hainan, the figure was 130 boys to 100 girls in 2005.

Nationwide this means there will be 30 million more men than women by 2020, making it difficult for those particularly with low income or little education to find a wife, the report said.

"The increasing difficulties men face finding wives may lead to social instability," the report said.

The report went on: "We need to develop a 'movement to embrace girls'... and effectively contain the trend towards greater gender imbalances."

The report also said that China's current 1.3 billion population would grow by 200 million by 2033.

And the number of 60-year-olds and over will jump from the current 143 million to 430 million by 2040, 30% of the total population.

The country will need to improve its social security and retirement system, as well as its family planning policies and education and health services, the report concludes.

The BBC's Daniel Griffiths, in BBC, says the one-child policy has already led to other major problems, with many single children facing the prospect of supporting two parents and four grandparents well into their old age.

that's why do not meddle with human nature, like restricting or encouraging births, that causes such social instability. people should be free to pro-create according to their means and ability. singapore is also regretting their former policy of restricting childbirths, now facing an ageing population.... even though their gov is giving incentives for having babies, the people are too busy with work.

I agree with you DW , in China case , they will encounter a very unique problem specifically for their country. I think it will change their perception on the fair gender much more in the next few decade.

Situation in Malaysia is not that bad , we still have more or less balance proportion as overall. The situation in Singapore is also not going well. They are slowly becoming an Old States...

In Malaysia's case, I remember very well when TDM came to power, he encouraged the people to pro-create, saying that the gov will take care of the rest. I believe it was a political strategy. The Malays took the advice. But TDM never expected the breakup of the Malays that formed Semangat46, Keadilan dan so on. TDM's vision of Malay voting power did not materialize with their majority population. At the social front, the moral decay plagueing the Malay youths is indirectly due to the large family size. The more children you have, the less attention will be given to their welfare. If you have only 2 or 3 kids, you will be able to watch them more closely in terms of education, communication and financially. So having a big family nowadays may not be a good thing if one is not able to handle the responsibilties.

Thats true DW , I think the pattern of new Malay couple now a day (especially in KL) is to be more concerned about the quality of life they can give as a parent rather than quantity.

I think as our society evolved , people will tend to have less children than their previous generation. Unless if the financial situation allow it , 2-3 is common.

I think whether girl or boy , that is god gifts , and that is according to dynamics of the society. Problem is when you start to have preferential for specific genders. To make worse , now a day people can go to infertility clinics and decide what kind of children you like to have. Its kind of scarry. Perhaps I am just old fashion.

Talking about sex selection, there is a doctor in JB who offers such a service. But he is ethical in such practice.... if you have 3 girls in a row then only he will help you to get a boy. If you're attempting your 1st child, he will not entertain. Only need to take pills.
