(Saling mempercayai).

The Red Warriors of Kelantan will begin their 2013 AFC Cup campaign on Wednesday evening when they welcome the Maldivian outfit, Maziya Sports and Recreation Club, to the Sultan Mohammad IV Stadium in Kota Bharu.  Maziya make their bow in this prestigious competition thanks to winning the FA Cup for the first time in their history last October with a 2-1 victory over Club Eagles, and excitement will no doubt be high for one of the biggest matches in their history to date.

Kelantan are seemingly not the all-conquering team who dominated Malaysia last year and won an unprecedented domestic treble, currently they find themselves five points off top spot in sixth place, nine points worse off than this stage last season.  Indeed their main problem this year has been scoring goals, managing only eight goals in nine league games, a direct consequence of losing key attacking players Azwan Roya, Mohammed Ghaddar and Norshahrul Idlan Talaha in the off-season.  However under-fire forward Keita Mandjou has recently enjoyed an upturn in form with four goals in his last three games, and with Australian forward Dimitri Petratos being available for this competition it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Red Warriors get back into scoring form here.

Whether the visitors will be the fresher of the two teams remains to be seen, this will be only their third match of a season which started only last month, in comparison this will be Kelantan’s tenth game of an already demanding season.  There is no doubting that Maziya coach Ismail Mahefooz has had his eyes set on this competition for a while, as demonstrated in the clubs ambitious off-season activity.   A plethora of names were attracted to the club including American-South Sudan player Ladule Lako LoSarah (San Diego Flash) and local players Mohamed Arif (Club Eagles), Hassan Aduham, Hussain Shuaib, Ali Nafiu and Adam Imran (VB Addu FC), Shafiu Ahmed, Ahmd Firaz and Mohamed Nishah (Victory SC) and Ali Imran (Club Valencia).

Kelantan come into this game with only one win in five, and off the back of a disappointing draw at home to Perak last Friday in which Mandjou saved their blushes with an equalising goal in the 88th minute.  Maziya on the other hand will be full of confidence after they opened their league campaign with a comfortable 4-0 defeat of Victory SC.  However despite the differing fortunes of the two teams, the visitors from the Maldives will have an enormous task getting anything from a ground which Kelantan have not tasted defeat in 33 matches.

The match will kick off at 8:45pm on Wednesday evening.

Kelantan 1-1 Maziya: Badri Radhzi to the rescue for the Red Warriors

The Green Boys were denied a famous win over the Malaysian champions, Kelantan by their influential captain, Badri Radhzi

Kelantan looked eager to start the match on the right foot as they pressured Maziya’s defence early on. Both Shakir Shaari and Petratos didn’t wait long to test Maziya’s goalkeeper, Imran, but their shots were safely parried away.

Maziya on the other hand did trigger several counter attacks via their captain, Ahmed Rasheed. Moments later, Abdulla Asadhulla shocked the Red Warriors defence when he struck a long shot catching Khairul Fahmi off guard. But the shot went high and wide.

Havoc occured in Maziya’s penalty box when Dickson's quick foot managed to create the chance for Petratos to strike, but his shot was well blocked by the defence, before Zairo's follow up went well wide.

The second half started with the same manner as the first period without any substitutions from both teams. Kelantan dominated most of the ball possession compared to Maziya who spent most of the time defending in their own half.

On the 62nd minute, Shakir‘s mistake stunned the home crowd as Hassan Adhuham capitalised with an easy finish. Ismail Easa beautifully lobbed the ball over the Kelantan defence opening a chance for Hassan to tap the ball in past Khairul Fahmi.

Shocked by the goal, Kelantan made two quicks subtitutions introducing their captain, Badhri Radzi and Indraputra Mahyuddin to strenghthen their final attacking third. Badhri Radzi didn’t wait long to mark his presence when he instantenously created a chance for Faiz Subri to strike, but it was well-saved by Imran.

Piya turned hero for the home crowd when he struck a beautiful shot for Kelantan to level the score. A through ball by Dimitri Petratos was quickly snapped by Badhri to shoot past the impressive Imran Mohamed.

Dickson Nwakaeme had his chance to score when he headed Badhri’s cross but was yet again denied by the quick reactions of the goalkeeper.

Towards the end of the match, Haris Safwan almost sent the crowd wild but his weak follow up meant Kelantan were forced to be content with a draw.

It was a suprising result for many as minnows Maziya managed to hold the Malaysian champions for a draw. A late substition by Bojan to introduce Badhri Radzi did affect the home team's gameplay but it was too late for them to grab a much needed home win.

Maziya coach glad with one point
Mar 6, 2013 11:47:00 PM

Maziya coach, Ismail Mahfooz, picked Kelantan to be the favourites of the group and was contented with the draw in the away fixture

Maziya SRC visited Kelantan for their first AFC Cup game of the season and were close to snatching a victory at Kota Bharu.

However, super-sub Badhri Radzi’s late equaliser cancelled out Hassan Adhuham’s 62ndminute strike.

Despite the draw, Maziya coach, Ismail Mahfooz, was pleased with his team’s performance.

“I am happy with the match results and also with the players’ fantastic discipline in defence,” he said.

Ismail is confident that Maziya SRC can progress to the next stage.

“If we can maintain the discipline, it is not impossible for us to get through,” he added.

With regards to Kelantan, the Maziya coach was quick to label the Red Warriors as the favourites but in his concluding statements, he mentioned that the team morale is very high after getting a point in a tough match.

Bojan not satisfied with the draw

Kelantan head coach rested key players Indra Putra and Badhri Radzi for the upcoming MSL game against LionsXII in the weekend

Kelantan opened their 2013 AFC Cup campaign this evening against Maldivian outfit Maziya SRC at the Sultan Mohammad IV Stadium.

The Red Warriors conceded 17 minutes into the second period after a mistake from Shakir Shaari allowed Hassan Adhuham to score.

A late equaliser from Badhri Radzi saved the home side the blushes as they managed to escape with a point.

Kelantan head coach Bojan Hodak was clearly upset at the 1-1 draw.

He said: "We played well, created chances but we didn’t score.

"Dimitri Petratos and Dickson Nwakaeme were well guarded by defenders.

"It was hard for them to move but they played well."

The Croatian also told reporters that he kept Indra Putra and Badhri Radzi on the bench to rest them for the big game against the LionsXII in the Malaysian Super League on Saturday.
