England football team has 'mental block,' says Capello



LONDON (AFP) - Fabio Capello, the favourite to become the next manager of England's national team, said Thursday that he thought England's players suffered from a "mental block" when playing international matches.

The Italian met with Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick and director of football Sir Trevor Brooking, the FA confirmed on Wednesday, with British newspapers expecting an announcement of Capello's appointment within 24 hours.

"There is tremendous difference in the attitude they show from one game to the next," Capello told The Sun tabloid.

"How can players of the level of (David) Beckham or (Michael) Owen have performances so different when they play for their national team?

"It's clear the shirt is very heavy even for those great champions. The manager has a fundamental role to play in this situation. He has to be more of a psychologist than a tactician or a technician. It's clear there is a mental block -- otherwise how can you explain their elimination from Euro 2008?"

Steve McClaren was fired last month after England's 3-2 defeat against Croatia at Wembley meant they failed to qualify for the Euro 2008 finals.

Capello continued: "We managers ask ourselves how can England, with the players they have, not qualify for the 2008 European Championships. The English team, much like the Spanish team, wins very little despite having some very good players."

Stuart Pearce is the Englishman the Football Association want to join Fabio Capello's Italian mob as they prepare to lead England into a new era.

Chief executive Brian Barwick and the FA board insisted that Pearce was given an influential role in Capello's team before agreeing to his terms to take over from Steve McClaren.  

Capello, who will be allowed to surround himself with his trusted Italian backroom staff, also had to agree to the creation of a full-time English physiotherapy and medical team.

The FA are aware that there is some opposition to the appointment of another foreigner to run the national team and are keen to put an Englishman in position to take over from Capello when the Italian moves on.  

England Under-21 coach Pearce, who has been impressive with the youngsters, is seen as that man and the FA are determined he should complete his international management education under Capello, whose

Capello confirmed

Former Juventus, AC Milan and Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello was confirmed as England manager by the Football Association on Friday. The 61-year-old Italian has signed a four-and-a-half year contract and will begin work on January 7. Capello succeeds Steve McClaren who was sacked last month after England failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

Fabregas Blasts 'Comfortable' English Players

Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas is the latest to have his say on English football's foreign invasion, suggesting English players are too afraid to risk moving overseas.



In the wake of England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008, many pointed the finger of blame squarely at the foreigner, who was taking up too much space in England's Premier League.  

But turning things around, Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas has criticised English players for being too willing to collect large pay cheques and sit on the bench in the Premiership rather than try their luck abroad.

The Gunners midfielder, originally at Barcelona, left Spain at a young age to come to England.  Although Arsenal were a step down from the Catalan giants at the time, Fabregas wanted to be at a club that offered a real chance to play games.  

Behind the likes of Xavi and Iniesta at Barcelona, Fabregas took the plunge and headed abroad instead.  Having blossomed into one of the world's finest midfielders, few can doubt he made the right choice.

Too Comfortable
