Aragones Stepping Down After Euro 2008

Spain coach Luis Aragones has announced that he will leave his job after the European Championships next summer.

"I've told the Federation that they should be looking for a replacement for after the European championship," he was quoted as saying on Wednesday.

"It's normal that they should look for a new direction after Euro 2008."

Aragones, whose contract expires after the tournament, took over from Inaki Saez in 2004.

Results have often been disappointing, but his side impressed at last summer抯 World Cup before being beaten in the second round by France.

Aragones claimed that he would quit if Spain did not reach the quarter finals, but later reversed his decision.

The former Mallorca and Atletico Madrid coach came under heavy pressure to resign after back-to-back Euro 2008 qualifier defeats against Northern Ireland and Sweden last year but was then handed a two-year contract by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

Aragones has since steadied the ship and his side could go top of the group with a win in Liechtenstein on Wednesday evening.

REDS DUO HELP SPAIN TO FRIENDLY VICTORY

  Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso were both in action as they helped Spain to a 2-1 friendly victory over Peru on Saturday night.
Alonso and Torres were both given 45 minute run-outs with the Reds striker paired up front alongside David Villa. Pepe Reina was an unused substitute.

Villa scored Spain's opening goal and defender Joan Capdevila netted the winner.

Luis Aragones's side are next in action against the USA in Santander on Wednesday.

Spain's opening game in Euro 2008 is against Russia on Tuesday, June 10, at the Tivoli Neu Stadium in Innsbruck.

Meanwhile, reserve duo Krisztian Nemeth and goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi were both unused substitutes as Hungary drew 1-1 with Euro 2008 finalists Croatia. It was the first time the pair have been involved with the senior squad.
