Lewis the Liar

Lewis has been hot topic past week in F1 circles.
Now, new race is to start and I bet Lewis feels a little bit unfocused. So what really happened. Bleacherreport tells it all.

Bleacherreport.com: Lewis Hamilton has indeed undeniably been caught lying to the race stewards in Australia. We know this for a fact because of the new transparency policy where hearing statements and radio traffic is now made public.

This is, of course, regarding the passing and letting past Trulli during the last safety car period in Melbourne last weekend. Because of Lewis being untruthful, he has been stripped of his 3rd place and his points from Australia.

Here is a breakdown of the events:

Trulli ran wide in a corner during the last Safety Car period and Hamilton then passed him. The team told him on the radio to let Trulli past him again while they checked with race control if Lewis was allowed to do so. Lewis then slows right down to let him by. Trulli now has the choice of either passing Lewis or come to a complete stop on the track. The last not being an option, he chooses to pass.

After the race, Lewis was interviewed and he told reporters that the team told him to let Trulli pass. When Trulli then gets investigated for passing under the Safety Car, the race stewards summons Lewis to clear up the events. The Race Director asks Hamilton if he had consciously allowed Trulli to overtake. Hamilton insisted that was not the case.

This is commonly known as lying. Or as the FIA put it: “Deliberately misleading”. As a result of that lie, Trulli is slapped with a 25 second penalty and loses his 3rd place and chance for any points.

But the plot thickens. Hamiltons explanation for passing Trulli, was that he was busy reading the Safety Car instructions on the dashboard display. Race stewards checked the times for posting these instructions and it didn't add up with his statement. The display was long cleared before he claimed doing this. This is another lie from Lewis.

Now with the transcripts and radio communication released, even more deception comes to light. Here is not only proof that the team told Lewis to let Trulli pass, but also that the McLaren Team Manager, David Ryan, also lied about this fact to the stewards.

McLaren Team Radio:

Team: Lewis, you need to allow the Toyota through. Allow the Toyota through now.
LH: OK.
LH: He's slowed right down in front of me.
Team: OK, Lewis. Stay ahead for the time being. Stay ahead. We will get back to you. We are talking to Charlie.
LH: I let him past already.
Team: OK, Lewis. That's fine. That's fine. Hold position. Hold position.
LH: Tell Charlie I already overtook him. I just let him past.

From the Sunday hearing after the race:

The Stewards and the Race Director questioned Lewis Hamilton and his Team Manager David Ryan specifically about whether there had been an instruction given to Hamilton to allow Trulli to overtake.

Both the driver and the Team Manager stated that no such instruction had been given. The Race Director specifically asked Hamilton whether he had consciously allowed Trulli to overtake. Hamilton insisted that he had not done so.

After the announcement had been made that Lewis was indeed stripped of his points, Martin Whitmarsh did his best to put out the fires. He seemed like a man desperate of keeping the level of trust that McLaren had gained since the scandal of 2007. But in doing so he only became untruthful himself. He said to reporters: "A discussion was occurring and before that discussion was finished, Trulli had re-passed."

This is what the radio transcript says:

LH: I let him past already.
Team: OK, Lewis. That’s fine. That’s fine. Hold position. Hold position.
LH: Tell Charlie I already overtook him. I just let him past.

Hamilton had himself let Trulli re-pass. He stated this twice over team radio. Trulli did not re-pass on his own accord. But Whitmarsh is saying that Trulli chose to re-pass by himself. This is also a lie.

McLaren can count their lucky stars if being stripped of points in Australia is all they get slapped with for this. Lesson learned: Don’t lie to the race stewards. FIA did right to right this wrong. Trulli was without fault in this case and deservedly got his 3rd place finish reinstated.

I cannot help but think about it that this is the behavior from the current reigning world champion. It's not a dent in the image of F1. This is a massive dent in the image of Lewis Hamilton. Before these events, public opinion about him was divided at best. Now he has received a blow that will stay with him for the rest of his Formula 1 career.

McLaren could learn this week whether it is to face greater sanctions for its part in the 'lying' scandal that scarred the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, adding to an already tough start to the 2009 campaign.

With its MP4-24 clearly not working well enough to put the Woking team on a par with the likes of Red Bull and Ferrari in the pursuit of the 'diffuser three', McLaren will be hoping to get off with a slap on the wrist when the FIA decides what punishment to dole out, but it is unlikely to get off that lightly.

Along with world champion Lewis Hamilton, the team has already been stripped of the points it scored in Melbourne, after the Briton and sporting director Dave Ryan were shown to have been economical with the truth when called to discuss a safety car infringement involving Toyota's Jarno Trulli.

While Hamilton subsequently appeared before the media to offer an apology - and claim that he was led by Ryan - the team could face the loss of all future points, a heavy financial penalty or worse should it be called before the FIA's World Motor Sport Council. McLaren veteran Ryan, meanwhile, has been suspended from duty pending further investigations.

"We are now awaiting reports from the FIA observer and stewards before consideration can be given to further investigation of [the] team's conduct," an FIA spokesman told Reuters.

With those reports expected imminently, it has been reported that McLaren's fate could be known as early as tomorrow [Wednesday], although any sanctions may not be forthcoming until the WMSC can convene, and that could leave the team hanging until the start of the European F1 season next month.

While Ryan appears to have been made the scapegoat for the affair, recently-installed team principal Martin Whitmarsh has remained quiet about his own future, although Mercedes motorsport vice-president Norbert Haug has revealed that he is expecting to talk to Ron Dennis' successor some time this week in a bid to clear things up before the on-track action resumes in China on 17 April.

"It's for the shareholders of this team to take a view, and it's ultimately up to them to decide what's best for this team," Whitmarsh told reporters during the Malaysian GP weekend.

Dennis was a the helm, with Whitmarsh as CEO, when McLaren was fined a record $100m and stripped of all its constructors' points in the 'spygate' row that overshadowed the 2007 Formula One season. On that occasion, designer Mike Coughlan took the fall, having been accused of receiving confidential information from Ferrari, and it is possible that the WMSC will take the incident into account when determining the outcome of the latest row involving the team.

McLaren acknowledges summons, confirms Ryan exit
The under-fire McLaren team has formally acknowledged that it has been 'invited' to appear before the FIA World Motor Sport Council to answer charges arising from the Australian Grand Prix, in which it is accused of 'deliberately misleading' race stewards to gain an advantage.

The sport's governing body confirmed Tuesday [7 April] that McLaren would face the possibility of further sanctions - which could go as far as complete expulsion from the Formula One world championship - after it was found guilty of attempting to manipulate the result of the season-opening event in Melbourne by not providing race stewards with a complete account of what took place while the drivers were held under the safety car in the closing stages of the race.

Having assumed third position on the road when Jarno Trulli took a brief grassy excursion, Lewis Hamilton appeared to slow and allow the Italian back through to retake the place. Trulli was later handed a 25-second penalty that dropped him to the tail of the lead lap, allowing Hamilton to rise to third in the published results.

At the stewards inquiry, however, neither Hamilton or McLaren sporting director Dave Ryan disclosed that the driver had been advised to move over for Trulli - thereby negating the charge that the Toyota driver had deliberately retaken the position by overtaking the Briton.

The penalties were subsequently reversed on the eve of last weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix, with Trulli reinstated to third and Hamilton excluded from the results altogether.

The world champion has since given a full account of, and apology for, his actions, and appears unlikely to face any further punishment. McLaren, however, has yet to learn its entire fate - while Ryan was suspended from duty at Sepang when the full extent of the matter came to light.

McLaren has since confirmed that Ryan's suspension has turned to dismissal, as it prepares to face the FIA in another courtroom showdown. It's last appearance before the WMSC resulted in a record £100m fine and the loss of all its constructors' championship points following 2007's espionage affair.

"We undertake to co-operate fully with all WMSC processes, and welcome the opportunity to work with the FIA in the best interests of F1," a brief McLaren statement confirmed.

"This afternoon McLaren and its former sporting director, Dave Ryan, have formally parted company. As a result, he is no longer an employee of any of the constituent companies of the McLaren Group."

New Zealander Ryan had served McLaren for 34 years, having first joined the team as a Kiwi visitor to Britain keen to prolong an interest in motorsport that had seen him compete in speedway events in his homeland. His first season with the team coincided with Emerson Fittipaldi's 1974 world championship title, and he has remained loyal ever since, working his way up the ladder as the team went from being a successful privateer, through the merger with Ron Dennis' Project 4 operation to the modern-day powerhouse it is now.

The 54-year old, however, was accused of a serious error of judgement in his handling of the stewards enquiry in Melbourne, and has paid the price with his job.

New team principal Martin Whitmarsh remains in the role, despite rumours that he may fall on his sword over the affair, but is likely to have talks with technical partner Mercedes over his future in the coming days. Hamilton, meanwhile, has been rumoured to be considering quitting McLaren, feeling that he had been unfairly dragged into the furore - speculation Whitmarsh denies.

The WMSC hearing, in which McLaren will officially face five charges of 'breaking Article 151c of the International Sporting Code', is scheduled for 29 April.
