October 02, 2009, (Sawf News) - Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt visited homes of two Iraqi refugee families in Jaramana district of southern Damascus in Syria on Friday, October 2.

Jolie was back in the Syrian capital for the second time in two years in her role as the UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. She called on the international community to help and support Iraqi refugees and facilitate their return home.

"Most Iraqi refugees cannot return to Iraq in view of the severe trauma they experienced there, the uncertainty linked to the coming Iraqi elections, the security issues and the lack of basic services. They will, therefore, be in need of continued support from the international community."

Clad in a white chiffon caftan over a long white slip, Jolie accessorized with oversized hoop earrings and silver bangles in her right arm. Her hair was pulled back and tied in a ponytail at the back.

She squatted on the floor with the women of two families that she visited in the poorest parts of Damascus and heard their sorrowful tales of torture and agony back in Iraq. Later she thanked for sharing their travails and helping her understand their plight. She comforted the women while motivtaing them to look ahead.

While Jolie visited the refugee families, partner Brad Pitt spent time with the refugee children.

During her day long visit, Jolie also met with the Syria's President Bashar al-Assad and his wife, Asma al-Assad.

After the meeting Jolie said, "It is clear that the Syrian people, no matter the challenges or difficulties they may face, have always shown generous hospitality to people in need. I hope that the rest of the world recognizes that we all have to share this burden and continue to take care of Iraqi refugees."

After her first visit to Syria in 2007 Jolie and Pitt set up a foundation and donated $1 million to help those suffering by the conflict in Sudan's Darfur region and neighboring Chad.
