UNIVERSITI MALAYA (UM) returns to the world’s top 200 university rankings at 180th place - after a two year absence.
It was a major improvement as the institution ranking jumped higher than last year's 230th place.
UM was ranked further down at 246 in 2007.
The institution was last listed in the world top 200 universities in 2006 at 192nd place.
Published by the Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings in the United Kingdom today (Thursday 8th October 2009) UM is the only Malaysian university in the top 200 list.
Four other Malaysian universities are listed in the world’s top 400 indicating the recognition of the depth of Malaysian education system among the world’s leading academics and employers.
The survey reported that Malaysians universities' performance comes on the back of a strong showing in the inaugural QS.com Asian University Rankings in May earlier this year.
Last year UKM was ranked 250, USM at 313, UPM 320 while UTM 356.
Apex University, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was previously in the Top 200 Universities list back in 2004 in 111th place.
This year, there are 16 Asian universities in the top 100 with the University of Tokyo at 22 nd place and University of Hong Kong at 24th.
National University of Singapore retains its ranking at 30 while Nanyang Technological University Singapore is now at 73 compared to 77th place last year.
UK and US universities continue to dominate the top 17 universities in the world.
Harvard University, US retains its top spot while the best-rated institution in the UK goes to University of Cambridge.
Yale in the US is third.
The rise of University College London to 4th place ahead of Oxford who is 5th equal with Imperial College, will be one of the major talking points this year.
Nunzio Quacquarelli, Managing Director of QS observes: “Governments and universities around the world are investing to increase their profile and recognition on the international stage, as higher education becomes an increasingly global industry.
"Today the rankings are used by employers identifying from where to recruit, academics choosing where to work and with whom to form partnerships, and by parents and students looking to make a sound education decision. Although rankings are contentious, the Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings are meeting vital needs of these various stakeholders.”
The Times Higher Education – QS table is the only international table that aspires to embrace the broader scope of a university’s mission rather than just its research quality or website effectiveness.
