Fairuzizuan-Zakry dipilih beregu kedua

Turut tewas Wong Choong Hann.

Selepas kuota beregu pertama dan kedua diisi Kien Keat-Boon Heong dan Fairuzizuan-Zakry, kini Hoon Thien How-Ong Soon Hock, Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah, Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong dan Goh Wei Shem merebut tiket terakhir.

Menurut Rexy, memandangkan pengalaman tidak lagi menjadi kriteria pemilihan beregu ketiga, maka ia akan mengambil kira prestasi semasa dan rekod pertemuan pemain (head to head).

Thomas and Uber Cuppers begin countdown to big day

KUALA LUMPUR: The hype over the Thomas Cup Finals is fast picking up steam.

And national doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky hopes that his players will stay focused and not get caught up with all kinds of distractions ahead of the Finals, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.

The Uber Cup Finals will also be held simultaneously.

Many programmes and activities have been lined up and it will start today with the official launch of the men’s and women’s world team championships hosted by title sponsors Proton.

The singles and doubles players will then officially begin centralised training on Monday at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara. They will move their base to the Putra Stadium on May 3.

The team will also be taking part in a motivation camp in Port Dickson from April 23-25. Prior to that, they will attend dinners hosted by several Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) officials.

Rexy is planning to hold simulation ties to help the players handle distractions in a more effective way.

“A lot of changes will take place during this time. The whole environment will be different. The most important aspect that I will focus on is the players’ mental preparation,” he said.

“This psychological factor is important. If they can overcome the distractions and challenges now, they can do the same during the Finals.

“We will hold simulation matches just days before the Finals. We will invite the public to rally support behind them.

“This will be a good platform to see how they can best cope playing in a team event.”

Currently, Rexy is also looking at identifying players who can cope with pressure.

”We will throw them into the fire and see who can come out of it unscathed. We need players who are brave to take their chances well in the team,” he said.

Rexy wants one more pair to complete the doubles cast in the Malaysian team.

Two pairs are assured of their places – Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari.

The final two doubles players will come from the three back-up combinations of Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong, Lim Khim Wah-Chan Peng Soon and Hoon Thien How-Ong Soon Hock.

The closing date for entries by name is April 23 and Rexy said that he would have a discussion with his team of coaches – Tan Kim Her, Rosman Razak and Jeremy Gan – before naming them next week.

Time and place is right for M'sia to regain the Thomas Cup
By RAJES PAUL

SUBANG JAYA: The time is right for Malaysia’s Thomas Cup players to shine at home after living in the shadows of China and Indonesia for about two decades.

Yesterday, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim threw down the gauntlet at the shuttlers to end a long wait for the prestigious world men’s team badminton title.

And the challenge was immediately taken up by world No. 1 and team skipper Lee Chong Wei during an official launch of the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals hosted by title sponsors Proton.

Countdown begins: The Thomas-Uber Cup trainees, led by world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei (left), looking at the new website launched for the Finals, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.

An official website (www.thomasuberkl2010.com) for the Finals, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16, was also launched yesterday.

Razali hoped that the Malaysian team would overcome whatever obstacles to regain the Cup last won at home in 1992.

“In a week’s time, Malaysia will finalise their team for the Finals. We have good players and I have the confidence in them. I expect the team to reach the final,” said Razali.

“We have been waiting for the Cup for so long. We have won the Cup five times while China and Indonesia have won it many more times.

“We have Chong Wei, who is unbeaten thus far this year. And he should be a tremendous inspiration to the team. The team also have strong backing from sponsors, especially Proton, the national body, Sports Ministry and the public.

“This is the right time and this is the year. And I hope our team will deliver.”

Have wheels will travel: Malaysia’s Thomas and Uber Cup players, led by skipper Lee Chong Wei (third from right), Deputy Sports Minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim (second from right) and Proton Holdings Berhad Group Managing Director Datuk Syed Zainal Syed Mohd Tahir (right) posing with the Proton car which will be the official transport for the teams in the Finals.

Chong Wei, who was the champion at the Korean Open, Malaysian Open and All-England this year, vowed to spearhead the team in the right direction.

“We will take up the challenge to reach the final. Of course, everyone wants us to win. We will try,” said Chong Wei.

“We have learnt from past mistakes that we should not put undue pressure on ourselves. The pressure will mount as the Finals draw nearer and we know the home expectations will be sky high.

“We will try to enjoy as we get the work done.

“We are looking forward to the motivation camp (April 23-25 in Port Dickson).

“It is important to instil team unity. Everyone is important in the team and we will support one another.

“This will be crucial in our bid to help Malaysia regain the Thomas Cup.”

Soon Hock-Thien How set to win Thomas Cup spot

PETALING JAYA: None of the men’s doubles back-up pairs have impressed the coaches at the ongoing Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) in New Delhi.

But, based on their ability to handle pressure, Ong Soon Hock-Hoon Thien How are set to be named as the third pair in the Malaysian squad for the Thomas Cup Finals, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.

The top two pairs assured of their places are seasoned campaigners Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif.

Thien How-Soon Hock and Hee Chun-Wee Kiong took part in the ABC but both pairs were knocked out in the quarter-finals while youngsters Peng Soon-Khim Wah’s only notable achievement was winning the Thailand Open last year.

National chief coach Rexy Mainaky said that Soon Hock-Thien How held a slight advantage over Hee Chun-Wee Kiong and Peng Soon-Khim Wah based on their fighting displays during the Malaysian Open in January.

Then, the duo, spurred on by the home crowd, pulled off a major upset by beating defending champions Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung of South Korea.

It was their biggest career win.

“The selection of the pair is not solely based on their performances. If it is based on results, there is little that separates them in terms of standard.

“All these three pairs have their strong and weak points,” said Rexy.

But I base my selection on the players’ ability to handle pressure. Soon Hock and Thien How relished playing in front of the home crowd. Instead of buckling under pressure, the home support gave them the extra motivation to do well.

“This is what I am looking for in a player.

“They have showed that they can take the pressure and were brave enough to stand up to the challenge.”

Rexy said they would finalise the naming of the third pair during a meeting between the coaches (Rosman Razak, Tan Kim Her, Jeremy Gan) and the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) general manager Kenny Goh tomorrow.

“The coaches have to be unanimous in their decision. We will hear all their opinions during the meeting on Monday before deciding on the best doubles pair for the Finals,” said Rexy.

The singles players set to be named for the Finals are world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, Wong Choong Hann, Mohd Hafiz Hashim and reserve Tan Chun Seang. (dah confirm ke ni?)

For the record, Malaysia last won the Thomas Cup in 1992 at Stadium Negara. Malaysia also hosted the Finals in 2000 but failed to even make the semi-finals.
