JPJ’s system back to normal

PETALING JAYA: Customers packed the Road Transport Department (JPJ) office here after a malfunction blamed on a construction glitch was rectified to bring service back to normal.

Petaling Jaya JPJ head Mohamad Hafiz Usman said there was twice as many customers at his branch yesterday.

Most customers who previously left the office disappointed returned to finish their business, he added.

The nationwide offline problem reportedly started following upgrading works around the main JPJ centre in Cyberjaya at around 4.30pm on Tuesday.

JPJ director-general Datuk Seri Ismaill Ahmad had said that pipe-laying work had disrupted the cooling system of the department’s mainframe computer, leading to a system failure.

The department upgraded its computer system in July last year to what it called the MySikap mode, supposedly a simple method that would allow users to manage vehicle, licence and permit transactions with the department from their own environment.

For several months, however, the system remained unstable and caused thousands to wait for days just to pay for their motoring requirements.
In February, the system was running at 90% efficiency, Ismail had said, and was supposed to have achieved full capacity by July.

Driver Azratul Ashiq, 33, said he was not fazed by the crowd.
“I come here often. I know it is always crowded towards the end of the month,” he said when met at the JPJ office.

Transport company owner M. Maniam, 53, said he came to the JPJ office on Tuesday to renew his road tax, only to be told the system was down.

Maniam said it was the first time in the 25 years that he had been in the transport industry that he had encountered such a problem.
Housewife Janet Leow, 58, vented her frustration at Government agencies in general.
She lamented that on one occasion last year she could not renew her driving licence at the JPJ or post offices for three days due to a supposed IT glitch.
Businessmen Muttaza Yawaris, 55, said: “There is nothing much we can do. These things happen once in a while.”

A runner, who declined to be named, said the public should not put the blame on JPJ.

“It affects us when we try to renew our expired road tax, but a system failure like this happens often,” he said.
