England in upset win

MARSEILLE: England stunned Australia 12-10 to reach the World Cup semi-finals yesterday after they finally produced a performance worthy of their world-champion status in a monumental battle with their old sporting rivals.

England's mighty pack earned the victory with an awesome scrummaging display while Jonny Wilkinson, Australia's destroyer in the final four years ago, delivered all the points.

Australia went into the game as huge odds-on favourites but, apart from a first-half Lote Tuqiri try, always struggled to get into the game as they were starved of possession.

It was not quite a repeat of the scrum demolition of Twickenham two years ago but near enough to ensure their dangerous backs did most of their work under pressure.

Australia coach John Connolly said he was at a complete loss to explain his team's flat performance.

揑t was our worst performance of the tournament for sure,

South Africa primed and ready for Fiji in quarter-finals

MARSEILLE: There's no disguising this one. South Africa vs Fiji should be a mismatch of a Rugby World Cup quarter-final.

Fiji would have to produce the perfect game to upset South Africa and advance to the semi-finals. So that's what coach Ilie Tabua is asking his squad to do.

Fiji qualified for their first World Cup quarter-final since the inaugural edition in 1987 with a 38-34 upset last weekend over Wales, considered the best match so far of the tournament.

揂fter a win like that it would be easy for the players to think 'this is done'. It can be hard to get the focus back,'' Tabua said. 揃ut we have told the players we need to perform better than last week. We are aiming to play the perfect game.

揑f you can play the perfect game ... the result will come.''

But something about the vibe in the South African squad indicates they're not about to let a golden chance for a second World Cup title slip lightly.

揥e've come to a stage now where the big guns have to put their hands up,'' said winger Bryan Habana, who has crossed for six tries in three matches. 揑'm very excited.''

Coach Jake White is wary of the Fijian running game, and named the most experienced ever Springboks lineup to shut them down.

The draw has opened up perfectly for the Springboks with the recognised heavyweights on the other side in the knockout rounds.

The winners of the South Africa-Fiji match meet either Argentina or Scotland in the semi-finals, increasing Springbok confidence of making the final.

揟he most important thing for us is not wondering who we're going to be playing against,'' White said. 揃ecause when we left South Africa people were saying we'd be playing Wales in Marseille.

揚eople said that France would win their pool and they didn't. None of those things have occurred.''

South Africa won all four group games, including a 36-0 thumping of defending champion England. Fiji had three tight wins over Japan, Canada and Wales, and their second-string lineup was trounced 55-12 by Australia.

With that in mind, veteran prop Os du Randt, the only survivor of South Africa's World Cup winning team and the 1996 Test win over Fiji, thought the Springboks were ideally placed.

揑 couldn't have asked for a better scenario

All over for Gregan and Larkham as Wallabies head home

MARSEILLE: The Wallabies will be packing their bags and heading home early after a humbling 12-10 quarter-final loss to their World Cup nemesis England here on Saturday.

The number two-ranked Australians, expected to overcome an English team rated by many as too one-dimensional, failed to handle the high-stakes pressure of the sudden-death occasion to become the first major casualty of the tournament.

With their demise comes the final call on their two senior players, record-capped George Gregan, playing in his 139th Test, and his fly-half partner and 102-capped Stephen Larkham, forced out of quarter-final with knee trouble.

揟hat wasn't our best performance. We just didn't take our opportunities and we probably didn't cope with the pressure as well as they did,

South Africa hold off Fiji fightback to reach semis

MARSEILLE: South Africa advanced to the semi-finals with a 37-20 victory over Fiji yesterday but had to survive a stirring fightback from the outsiders in the latest instalment of the World Cup's remarkable quarter-final weekend.

South Africa deservedly led 13-3 at halftime after tries for centre Jaque Fourie and captain John Smit but Fiji levelled with two converted tries in two minutes from Vilimoni Delasau and Sireli Bobo, while the islanders were down to 14 men.

The Springboks edged clear with a Percy Montgomery penalty and, after Fiji had twice gone agonisingly close with some adventurous running, closed it out with a pushover try for flanker Juan Smith. Butch James added a try in the final minute, which Montgomery coverted.

South Africa will play the winners of the fourth quarter-final between Argentina and Scotland in Paris later yesterday.

France revive campaign with astonishing victory over tournament favourites

CARDIFF: Hosts France resurrected their World Cup campaign on Saturday with an astonishing 20-18 quarter-final win over tournament favourites New Zealand at the Millennium Stadium.

France had been given little chance against a side who have swept all before them over the past three years after losing the tournament's opening game to Argentina.

Bitter end: New Zealand抯 flanker and captain Richie McCaw (left) hugs lock Ali Williams after the demoralising loss.

But in a victory every bit as memorable as their wonderful semi-final win over the All Blacks at the 1999 World Cup, France rallied from a 13-0 deficit to advance to a semi-final against defending champions England in Paris next weekend.

It was the first time the All Blacks have been knocked out of the tournament before the semi-final stage and the inquests back home are likely to be long, intense and ultimately harsh.

The match changed course after New Zealand centre Luke McAlister was sent to the sin-bin following a cynical piece of obstruction on French centre Yannick Jauzion.

McAlister had been New Zealand's main threat in the first half, scoring their only try when he cut through the midfield then fielded a return pass from Jerry Collins to score near the posts.

His absence galvanised the French, who had played in the first 40 minutes like a team who believed they were doomed to lose on foreign soil after squandering the opportunity for a Paris quarter-final.

They abandoned the kicking game which had won scant reward in the first half and started to play like the French of old, with passion and a burning commitment to running and passing at speed.

With the New Zealanders scrambling in defence with only six backs, France ran the ball wide on both sides of the pitch. Eventually the All Blacks ran out of cover and the splendid French flanker Thierry Dusautoir swooped through a gap to score.

New Zealand retaliated by driving the ball through the forwards repeatedly and number eight Rodney So'oialo broke a 13-13 deadlock with a 63rd minute score, awarded after a lengthy deliberation by the television match official.

Remarkable fightback: France players celebrate after their quarterfinal win over New Zealand in the World Cup on Saturday

But the force was now with the French. Frederic Michalak came off the bench and France's most creative back responded with a searing run through the centre, glancing to left and right, before off-loading to Jauzion who completed the 69th minute try with the minimum of fuss.

Jean-Baptiste Elissalde's conversion gave France the lead for the first time in the match and it was the French who showed the greater composure in a frenzied final 10 minutes.

揟he best side won,

Springboks installed as new World Cup favourites

MARSEILLE: South Africa returned to Paris yesterday carrying the tag of World Cup favourites after surviving a brutal weekend that claimed the scalps of New Zealand and Australia.

The Springboks almost came unstuck themselves against tiny Fiji before winning an absorbing quarter-final 37-20 to set up a semi-final clash with Argentina.

The South Africans were not at their best against the flamboyant Pacific Islanders and had to weather a late storm to avoid joining New Zealand and Australia on the casualty list.

But unlike the All Blacks and Wallabies, the Springboks regained the composure when it really mattered and coach Jake White said his team were now perfectly placed going into the serious end of the competition.

揥e're in the top four and we've got no injuries, we scored five tries (against Fiji),
