1. Basically, it is a search method. Particularly, it is a method that searches for the best solution(according to a criteria defined by some function) from a range of possible solution in a problem.
2. How? It adapts what happens in real world ie. the concept of evolution or natural process such as natural selection, genetic encoding of solution etc etc., and simulates the problem domain with computer programs.
