Former Uruguay striker Dario Silva has had his lower right leg amputated following a car crash, a hospital director has confirmed.
Silva suffered an exposed fracture of the leg after the accident on Montevideo's main seafront avenue on Sunday morning, when his pick-up truck collided with a lamp-post.
"There was no other solution other than to amputate below the knee," said Mario Cancela, head of the intensive care unit at the hospital where Silva is being treated.
"He's stable, he's lucid and he's told me how the accident happened," added Cancela.
"This has encouraged us because from an encephalic point of view, it means he should make an almost complete recovery."
Cancela said that Silva, who was in an induced coma until Monday morning, was not yet aware of the amputation.
Silva played for English Premier League Portsmouth last year and was out of contract.
The 33-year-old striker began his career with local side Defensor Sporting and then joined more fashionable Penarol.
He moved to Europe in 1995 to play for Italy's Cagliari and has since played for Espanyol, Malaga and Sevilla in Spain as well as Portsmouth.
Silva made 49 appearances for Uruguay between 1995 and 2005, scoring 14 goals, and played at the 2002 World Cup, when Uruguay were knocked out in the first round.
His last international appearance was in the World Cup qualifying playoff at home to Australia last year.

Primera Liga Team of The Week (Rd. 4)
Goalkeeper
1. Canizares (Valencia): Pulled another few out of the top drawer after impressing last week, as Barcelona tried their luck from distance. Deco, Ronaldinho and Messi were all denied superbly.
Defenders (right to left)
2. Contra (Getafe): The bore draw with Athletic Bilbao had few positives, but one of them was Contra's superb show against Yeste.
3. Alexis (Levante): A towering defensive display against Deportivo, helping his side keep a clean sheet and pick up their second consecutive win this season.
4. Cannavaro (Real Madrid): The horror show against Lyon is a thing of the past! The World Cup winner underlined his value to the side as he helped Real keep it clean against Real Betis. Incredibly, Real Madrid have conceded just one in La Liga this season.
5. Fernando Navarro (Mallorca): The Barcelona discard put in a superb display against Rufete, blanking Espanyol out completely on that flank.
Midfielders (right to left)
6 Valdo (Osasuna): With Celta concentrating on keeping Milosevic and Webo quiet, the Spaniard stepped up to become a consistent thorn in their side, and also got himself a cracking goal for his efforts.
7. Raul Garcia (Osasuna): Stamped his authority in the middle of the pitch, running the show for Osasuna as they displayed last season's form to get a huge away win against Celta Vigo.
8. Andres Iniesta (Barcelona): It was his introduction after the break that sparked a dull, uninspired, listless Barcelona into action. That he also brought them level with a cool finish, just about completes the display.
9. Reyes (Real Madrid): There is no doubting that Real Madrid still have work to do on the offensive front, but with the former Sevilla and Arsenal winger in this kind of mood, they are fast-tracking their way towards top form. Yet another superb display to help Real Madrid go top.
Forwards
10. Zigic (Racing Santander): It might have been an average debut against Barcelona, but the giant Serb proved his enormous worth to the side, twice helping Racing claw back to snatch an unlikely point against Nastic.
11. Kapo (Levante): A superb brace from the Ivory Coast born Frenchman, to send a seemingly recovering Deportivo to their first defeat of the season. Two straight wins, and Lopez Caro's boys are moving onwards and upwards!
Those Who Came Close
Maxi Rodriguez for rescuing Atletico Madrid from sheer humiliation against nine men Sevilla.
Cani for sparking Villarreal's come-back against former employers Zaragoza
Diarra for a strong midfield show, as ever, and the superb header that won it for Real Madrid.
Ricardo for turning in a few high quality saves when Celta did manage to get into scoring positions.
Calle and Sinama Pongolle for handing Recreativo a superb win in San Sebastian, and plunging Real Sociedad into chaos. |
