Two of seven escaped detainees shot dead
January 10, 2013
BUKIT MERTAJAM, Jan 10 — The police today shot dead two of the seven detainees who escaped from a police van transporting them in Butterworth last Monday.
Penang police deputy chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Jaafar said the two men were shot dead in Kampung Pelet here as they attempted to evade police inspection of a car.
He said they were spotted in a Proton Perdana car and attempted to flee but the police shot at a tyre of the vehicle, causing it to plunge into a river.
A shootout occurred as the men fired at the police and the police opened fire, killing them, he told Bernama.
The dead men have yet to be identified, he said.
Abdul Rahim, who headed a special team to hunt down the fugitives, said the police had been tipped off that one of the detainees had bought food at a petrol kiosk along the Kulim-Butterworth highway near here at about 2am.
He said the police have launched a massive operation to track down the remaining five detainees right up to the Kedah border, and believe that they were still in an oil palm plantation there.
At about 9am on Monday, nine detainees being transported from the Penang prison to the courts complex in Butterworth caused a commotion, blinded the escorting policemen with curry powder when they stopped the vehicle to investigate at the outer ring road, beat them up and fled with the van.
Two of the nine were arrested as they stood by the van which was abandoned in Kampung Padang Chempedak, Tasek Gelugor.
The other seven fled towards the oil palm plantation in Ara Kuda. — Bernama
