Path of missing plane entered manually via flight computer
KUALA LUMPUR — The first turn to the west that diverted the missing Malaysia Airlines plane from its planned flight path from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing was carried out through a computer system that was most likely programmed by someone in the plane’s cockpit who was knowledgeable about airplane systems, said senior United States officials.
Instead of manually operating the plane’s controls, whoever altered Flight MH370’s path typed seven or eight keystrokes into a computer on a knee-high pedestal between the captain and the first officer, reported The New York Times yesterday, citing the officials.
Investigators are convinced that someone with deep knowledge of the Boeing 777 aircraft and commercial navigation diverted the jet, which had 239 people on board, perhaps thousands of miles off its scheduled course.
The Flight Management System, as the computer system is known, directs the plane from point to point specified in the flight plan submitted before each journey. It is not clear whether the plane’s path was reprogrammed before or after it took off.
The fact that the turn away from Beijing was programmed into the computer has reinforced investigators’ belief that the aircraft was deliberately diverted and that foul play was involved. It has also increased their focus on the plane’s captain and first officer.
The report by The New York Times, however, was dismissed by Malaysia Airlines, with Chief Executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya yesterday calling it speculation. “Once you are in the aircraft, anything is possible,” he said.
Investigators piecing together data from military radar and satellites believe someone turned off the plane’s identifying transponder and Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting system (ACARS), which transmits maintenance data, and turned west, recrossing the Malay Peninsula and following a commercial aviation route towards India.
Malaysian officials have backtracked on the exact sequence of events — they are now unsure whether the ACARS system was shut down before or after the last radio message was heard from the cockpit — but said that did not make a material difference.
“This does not change our belief, as stated, that up until the point at which the aircraft left military primary radar coverage, its movements were consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane,” Defence Minister and Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said yesterday.
Malaysian officials said on Monday that suicide by the pilot or co-pilot was a line of inquiry, although they stressed that it was only one of the possibilities under investigation.
Meanwhile, the Thai military said yesterday that its radar detected a plane that might have been the jetliner just minutes after the aircraft’s communications went down and that it did not share the information with Malaysia earlier because it was not specifically asked for the data.
A twisting flight path described yesterday by Thai air force spokesman, Air Vice-Marshal Montol Suchookorn, took the plane to the Strait of Malacca, which is where Malaysian radar tracked Flight MH370 early on March 8. However, Mr Montol said the Thai military did not know whether it had detected the same plane.
Thailand’s failure to quickly share possible information regarding the fate of the plane and the people on board may not substantially change what Malaysian officials know, but it raises questions about the degree to which some nations are sharing defence information, even in the name of an urgent and mind-bending aviation mystery.
When asked why it took so long to release the information, Mr Montol said: “Because we did not pay any attention to it. The Royal Thai Air Force looks only into any threats against our country. So, (for) anything that did not look like a threat to us, we simply looked at it without taking action,” he said. Agencies |

Bukan kelas atau tidak. MH370 terbang di atas udara Msia. Mmg takkan pay attention. Tapi kat Msia, UFO terbang atas ruang udara Malaysia tak pay attention.
Sampai sekarang TUDM tidak menafikan kebobrokan mereka. Apa kes?
