Papers: Webb to ref title decider
03/05/2011 10:30
Sam Wallace writes in the Independent…
Webb to ensure vital game is free of controversy
The World Cup final referee Howard Webb is set to be announced today as the man in charge of Manchester United's pivotal Premier League game against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday with the league and referees' bodies desperate for a solid performance from the officials. The appointment of Webb, 39, is expected to be confirmed by Mike Riley, the general manager of the referees' organisation, this afternoon after a bad weekend for Premier League officials in which several wrong decisions – most notably Frank Lampard's "ghost goal" against Tottenham – have put them under scrutiny like never before. The appointment to Sunday's game of Webb – heavily criticised by Liverpool for his performance in their FA Cup third-round defeat to United in January – will not be without controversy. However, the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL) body, which administers and selects referees, is aware that the game needs to pass off without a major talking point around the referee and has chosen the man regarded as the best in the English game.
In transfer speculation, the Daily Mail claims Real Madrid have held talks with Udinese winger Alexis Sanchez, scuppering Sir Alex Ferguson's chances of signing the £30million rated Chilean international in the summer.
Elsewhere, plenty of coverage is attributed to the Reds’ 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League, with many of today’s papers featuring Patrice Evra’s comments on the title race and Sunday's title-deciding clash with Chelsea, as published by ManUtd.com on Monday. |

Pengadil silap lagi - Ferguson

Sir Alex wary of big week
Sir Alex Ferguson will draw on recent history as he prepares for "two massive games" against Schalke and Chelsea - and he's asking supporters to do the same.
A point was made to the manager in his press conference that United fans might be focusing more on Sunday's virtual title decider instead of Wednesday's second leg against the Germans, especially as the Reds have a cushion of two away goals for the European tie.
"It is the optimism they (the fans) have got," acknowledged Sir Alex. "But we don’t share that because we feel we have a lot of work to do tomorrow. I think it is very easy to get complacent in modern life, there are many examples of it. But I hope nobody at Manchester United regards it as a formality tomorrow, I certainly will not be.
"I think the work ethic will need to be very high tomorrow, very high, in order for us to qualify (for the final). We know that Schalke have nothing to lose. That is the message he (Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick) will give to his team. I think they will have a go and try to win the match - there is nothing else they can do. Any coach in a semi-final must give his team that chance to try to win the match and I think we’ll find that he will have a real go."
While the classic mantra from the United manager is to concentrate on the next game, he admits the looming showdown with Chelsea will affect the side he puts out against Schalke. He knows only too well, from only last season, how a tough midweek tussle with a German side can help to derail his team when domestic action resumes at the weekend.
"If you look at the experience of last year when we lost the league, the team were very tired against Chelsea after playing Bayern Munich on the Wednesday," reflected Sir Alex. "That will have a bearing on my team selection. We’ve got two massive games, both as important as the other. There will be some changes (against Schalke). Hopefully the nucleus of the team is still good enough to win."
Victory over Schalke would not only bring United a place in the Champions League final for the third time in four years, it would also give the Reds a timely boost after the league defeat at Arsenal.
"It has always been the case at this club that if we lose a game then we have to recover quickly," said Sir Alex. "We always have work to do in the next match. That is the great beauty of football at least. You always have the next game in which to do something and we’ve only had to wait three days. That is an important issue for us because it is a part of being a good team, how you can recover from a defeat. The interesting thing about last weekend was that the four (Champions League semi-final) teams all lost (league matches). So European games do take it out of you. I have to pick the right team tomorrow in order to have the same kind of freshness I need for Sunday’s match." |

United v Schalke
Avoid defeat at OT and the Reds will set up a repeat of the 2009 Champions League final...
Form guide
Following last Tuesday's 2-0 triumph over Schalke in the away leg, United stumbled to a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Barclays Premier League - a result which leaves the Reds three points clear at the top with a title-decider against Chelsea to come on Sunday. Surprisingly, all four Champions League semi-finalists lost their domestic matches at the weekend, including the Reds' German visitors - Ralf Rangnick’s side were thrashed 4-1 by Bayern Munich.
Ins and outs
Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he’ll shuffle his pack for Wednesday’s match, earmarking Dimitar Berbatov, Paul Scholes and Michael Owen for starting roles. The boss has also confirmed Darren Fletcher will feature at some point following a successful recovery from a virus. Wayne Rooney is a doubt after missing training on Tuesday morning with a tight hamstring. Schalke are without long-term absentees Christoph Moritz (knee), Christian Pander (toe) and Mario Gavranovic (ankle), but Benedikt Howedes (stomach strain) and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (knee) are in contention after missing several weeks of action.
Last meeting
With a somewhat sketchy record against German opposition, particularly in knockout rounds, United were fully braced for a difficult night at the Vetlins-Arena last week. However, a fine team display made light work of Schalke and the Reds registered a comfortable 2-0 win with second-half goals in quick succession from Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney. Sir Alex declared the victory to be among the club’s greatest away wins in Europe: "We've had some fantastic performances and Juventus (1999) will always be high on the list but this certainly ranks as one of the best."
Star man
If you hadn't heard of Manuel Neuer prior to the first leg in Gelsenkirchen, you certainly knew his name afterwards. Germany's number one was sensational against the Reds and almost single-handedly kept his side in the game, pulling off a string of world-class saves to deny United’s attacking efforts for more than an hour. Although a move to Bayern Munich is reportedly signed and sealed, Neuer continues to be touted as a replacement for Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford.
Any sub-plots?
Bayer Leverkusen (in 2002) and Bayern Munich (2010) have both knocked United out of the Champions League knockout stages on the away-goals rule. Schalke need to win by three goals or more to achieve the same. Unlikely? Erm, they won 5-2 at Inter Milan in the last round...
Whistle-blower
Pedro Proenca is the man in the middle for this one. The Portuguese official, born in Lisbon, has been involved in the Champions League since 2007. He refereed United’s 1-1 draw with Valencia at Old Trafford earlier this season.
Did you know?
Edwin van der Sar will break the record for Champions League semi-final appearances if he features against the Germans - taking his total to 14 games overtaking Claude Makelele’s 13. |

Rooney worry for Reds
Wayne Rooney will be assessed by United just hours before the Champions League semi-final second leg clash with Schalke, as the striker tries to overcome the injury that kept him out of Tuesday's open training session at Carrington.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Sir Alex said of Wayne: "He didn't train this morning. He has a tight hamstring so we left him today. We'll see what he's like tomorrow."
Rooney's absence from open training wasn't in itself a matter of concern, given that he has previously missed such a session prior to playing in the subsequent match. For example, in the wake of his Upton Park media storm, the United striker trained indoors and away from the spotlight on the eve of the Reds' quarter-final win at Chelsea, where he scored the only goal.
Sir Alex was not asked about the other notable absentee from training, Fabio, but he did announce some better news in that Darren Fletcher "will play some part" against Schalke. The Scotland captain hasn't featured in the Reds' first team since the 3-1 league defeat at Liverpool on 6 March but after returning to action in the reserves last Thursday, he's now deemed ready for senior duty.
"Darren Fletcher will play part of the game tomorrow night. He's working hard and he'll be involved," confirmed Sir Alex.
The manager admitted that the increased significance of this weekend's match against Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League will have a bearing on his team selection for the Schalke game.
"There'll be some changes," he reiterated on Tuesday, having said on Sunday that Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Paul Scholes will all come in to freshen up his starting eleven.
The full list of players involved in the open training session - as reported earlier in Today at Old Trafford - was as follows:
Goalkeepers - Edwin van der Sar, Tomasz Kuszczak, Anders Lindegaard
Defenders - Patrice Evra, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, John O'Shea, Rafael, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans
Midfielders - Antonio Valencia, Nani, Ji-sung Park, Michael Carrick, Anderson, Darron Gibson, Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher, Gabriel Obertan, Bebe
Strikers - Michael Owen, Javier Hernandez, Dimitar Berbatov |

Manchester United's shadow squad secured a repeat of their 2009 Champions League final with Barcelona, but United boss Sir Alex Ferguson left no-one in any doubt that Sunday's Premier League crunch with Chelsea is the most important task of the week.
First-half goals from Antonio Valencia and Darron Gibson ensured there was no way back for Schalke, who were already two goals down from the first leg, and a late double from Anderson completed a handsome victory.
For Gibson in particular it represented a fitting riposte to the critics who forced him off Twitter last week after spending barely two hours exposed to a demanding public.
And Ferguson got exactly what he wanted too, namely the chance of revenge over Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, who was watching from the stands, for that one-sided encounter in Rome.
But crucially, he also kept all his main players fresh for the visit of Carlo Ancelotti's side, who will seize top spot with two games left if they win.
Eight changes from the weekend defeat at Arsenal was not so much a calculated gamble as a starting line-up born out of necessity from a manager who simply could not afford to risk injury.
As a result, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand found themselves in the unusual position of not being required at all for a semi-final decider in club football's biggest competition, while four more key men started on the bench.
Ferguson must have factored into his thinking that the Germans simply could not be as bad as they were on home soil eight days ago.
They were certainly more solid in the opening stages, as was Gibson's stomach as he took an accidental kick from Jefferson Farfan.
United had an early chance to settle the tie when Dimitar Berbatov wriggled into space with some deft skill by the dead ball line, only to allow Manuel Neuer to intercept his cross as Antonio Valencia waited for a tap-in.
Chris Smalling was similarly frustrated the next time Berbatov found himself with a crossing opportunity.
The nervousness soon disappeared though as Anderson quickly switched a stray pass into Gibson's path.
He picked out Valencia and, unlike last week, United did not need 11 chances before finding the net as the Ecuadorian sent his precise effort through Neuer's legs.
Ferguson celebrated with the gusto of a man who felt the tie was over, his total confidence in a squad so many have doubted vindicated once more.
Within five minutes United had their second. The same three players were involved again too as Anderson used his strength to provide Valencia with a return pass.
He rolled the ball into Gibson's path, although the Irishman would be the first to admit he benefited from a huge slice of good fortune as Neuer inexplicably fumbled, proving he is not perfect after all given last week's heroics.
It was simply unthinkable that United might lose a four-goal advantage, but Jose Jurado gave them something to ponder almost immediately when he profited from back-to-back errors by Smalling and Rafael.
To follow the burst of goals, three yellow cards were dished out with even greater speed, condemning United's entire central midfield trio to walk a disciplinary tightrope for the remainder of the game.
The most vulnerable of the three was obviously Paul Scholes, who collected his caution for failing to retreat at a free-kick rather than one of his trademark wild tackles.
But tonight there was never any danger of the 36-year-old overstepping the mark.
Gibson had already made a positive impact, as had Anderson. The Brazilian is still bedevilled by inconsistent performances, but this was a good one.
He even managed to do something he has never managed during his entire time at United, score twice in a game.
His first was due to his persistence, firing home with a shot on the turn after he had been crowded out of his first attempt to finish Nani's low cross.
The second was a tap-in thanks to Berbatov's unselfish square ball.
With Darren Fletcher returning after two months out and no-one suspended for the final, everything had gone right for Ferguson and his team.
But the true test this week will come from another team in blue, desperate to retain their title and thirsting for revenge at being eliminated from this very competition at the quarter-final stage.

United v Barcelona Saturday 28 May 2011, 19:45 BST Wembley Stadium "It'sfantastic for the club [to be in a third final in four years]. I'vesaid it many times, we should have done better in Europe over theyears. I think we're getting closer to that. I think this team can winthe cup. I think it's a team full of great desire and determination. These qualities, allied to their ability, will help them at Wembley." - Sir Alex Ferguson
Reds reach European final
United will meet Barcelona in the Champions League final at Wembley later this month after seeing off the challenge of Schalke.
It will be the Reds' third European final in four years, having previously reached the 2008 and 2009 showpieces.
While the 2008 spectacle ended in triumph, following a penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea, the 2009 final was one to forget with Sir Alex's men beaten 2-0 by Barcelona.
The two sides will meet again on Saturday 28 May at Wembley as the Reds look to secure a fourth European Cup. |
