Craig: It's perfect final for me

The 32-year-old was born in Cardiff and enjoyed a loan spell there last season, so was delighted when they saw off Crystal Palace in the semi-final on Tuesday night.

And after scoring the decisive goal which sent Liverpool to Wembley, he said: "The omens were looking good going into tonight after I saw Cardiff go through.

"I was delighted for them and this couldn't be a better final for me.

"Cardiff means so much to me. It's funny how football can work out at times."

Player Ratings: Liverpool 2-2 Manchester City (3-2 Agg)

A late Craig Bellamy goal saw Kenny Dalglish's side through to the League cup final on aggregate, after the visitors came from behind to lead against the run of play

Liverpool
José Reina Paez   6.0

Virtually a spectator for most of the game but had to pick the ball out of his net twice - and on both occasions had no chance of making a save.

Glen Johnson  7.0
Constantly got forward to join the attack and played his part with a clever pass for Bellamy's goal. Comfortable defensively and communicated well with the rest of the back four.

Martin Skrtel   7.5
The Slovakian was dominant in the air against Dzeko, denying the Bosnian any time or space to pose a threat. Could have scored at the other end but saw Hart somehow keep out his toe-poked shot.

Daniel Agger  7.5
The Dane was solid and composed in defence while always showing class on the ball. Played a part in the penalty award as his firm shot was blocked by Richards' arm.

José Enrique   7.5
Had no problems against Zabaleta in the first half and remained solid defensively after the break. Very classy on the ball, producing two particularly dangerous crosses and forcing Hart into action early on after bombing into the City penalty box.

Jordan Henderson  6.5
Hoevered a little under the radar, but his willingness to run was vital for Liverpool's high-energy gameplan. Produced a peach of a pass for Bellamy in the first half.

Charlie Adam  6.0
The Scot played some dangerous passes, particularly to Bellamy after the break as the game became increasingly stretched. Shorter passing not quite as good while he was a little fortunate not to concede a penalty for a clumsy challenge on Dzeko. Good work in the build-up to the penalty.

Stewart Downing   5.0
Provided good balance on the wing but lacked confidence to take on his man while his delivery and link-up play were poor. Could have doubled Liverpool's lead in the second half but his powerful volley was smothered by Hart.

Steven Gerrard   7.0
Kept his cool from the spot to slam an unstoppable penalty low into the corner of the net in the 41st minute. Tired in the closing stages but his experience and influence were crucial as Liverpool held on.

Craig Bellamy    Top of the Match    8.5

Scored a superb goal to put Liverpool in the final, keeping his cool to fire into the net from 10 yards against his former club. Set the tone for Liverpool with his constant movement as the focal point of the hosts' attack. Always running the channels, showing great pace and goal threat. Powerful first-half shot saved by Hart after he spun away from Savic.

Dirk Kuyt   6.5
Put in a shift and found space down the right after the break. Final ball wasn't great but produced one very good delivery for Downing.

• Substitutions
Martin Kelly  N/A

Replaced Bellamy in the 88th minute.

Andy Carroll  N/A
Replaced Kuyt in added time.

Liverpool Transfer News: Reds Submit Offer For Mauricio Isla?

With little over six days remaining in the January transfer window, Liverpool fans are hoping that Kenny Dalglish has a few surprises up his sleeve before the window slams shut.

So far, like the majority of Premier League clubs, Liverpool have been very quiet in the window and even the transfer gossip is thin on the ground.

However, here’s one piece that may provide a little hope to the Anfield faithful. The Daily Star have reported that Liverpool have made an offer for £15m rated midfielder Mauricio Isla.

The Star doesn’t disclose the exact amount Liverpool are said to have offered but it does report that Kenny Dalglish has been impressed with the Chilean this season after he put in some eye-catching performances for current club Udinese.

Although Isla is predominantly a midfielder, he’s a versatile player who can play on the wing and also at full-back. At 23-years-old he’s also a good age so in theory he looks like a good potential addition to the squad.

Our verdict on this transfer gossip: The Star have provided very little detail about this supposed ‘offer’ and their report lacks any real substance. Although Kenny Dalglish may be a fan of the player, at this point this piece of transfer news must go down as pure speculation.

Liverpool Transfer News: 10 Realistic Replacements for Andy Carroll

Damien Comolli once said:

A guy might have big talent, but might not want to work hard. I lose sleep about this on a regular basis. When you first identify the targets, you look at the character, of course.

What talent does Andy Carroll have?

He has no pace, no vision, no dribbling ability and evidently isn't a good finisher.

I guess Liverpool management overlooked the character part when they evaluated Carroll.

He has consistently found himself on the wrong side of the law by various means: assaulting his ex-girlfriend, assaulting another woman and glassing a person.

He doesn't just abuse people, he also abuses his liver to the extent that Fabio Capello told the world about it.

Here are 10 realistic replacements for Carroll.

Rangers: Nikica Jelavić

According to his father, Nikica Jelavić is 'most likely' to sign for Liverpool.

With 17 goals in 28 games this season, he's an upgrade from Andy Carroll.

Heerenveen: Bas Dost

Bas Dost has scored 16 goals in 18 Eredivisie games.

At 6'5", he would have no issues transitioning into a more physical league like the Premier League.

Still, you always need to take forwards who score a ton of goals in weaker leagues with a grain of salt.

Former Heerenveen forward Afonso Alves scored goals for fun in the Eredivisie, but struggled to replicate that form for Middlesbrough.

Sporting Lisbon: Ricky Van Wolfswinkel

Sporting Lisbon signed Ricky van Wolfswinkel for just £4.5 million and potentially can sell him for £12-15 million.

Wolfswinkel was ambitious to move to Lisbon because he could have played it safe by staying at Utrecht.

Last year, I watched him play solidly against Lazio's centre-backs André Dias and Mobido Diakité. At the time, Dias was having a good season, and Diakité is a physical specimen.

Wolfswinkel is clearly a better player than Andy Carroll, yet somehow the Englishman is worth £30.5 million more.

Groningen: David Texeira

Ronald Koeman, Arjen Robben, and Luis Suárez.

These three players were all given their first taste of European football by Groningen.

Not bad for a small club.

David Texeira could be the next notable former player from Groningen because he is finding the back of the net with regularity.

Liverpool should take the initiative and sign Texeira before he makes it big.

With the help of compatriots Suárez and Sebastián Coates, Texeira's transition to life in England will be made easier.

Lille: Moussa Sow

Another missed opportunity.

According to Goal.com, Fenerbahçe have reached an agreement with Lille to sign Moussa Sow for £10.9 million.

He has pace, he holds the ball up well and he can find the back of the net with ease.

Sevilla: álvaro Negredo

By signing álvaro Negredo, the burden of leading the line would be taken off Luis Suárez, allowing the Uruguayan to prosper.

At the same time, Negredo won't be lost on the field like Andy Carroll, because the Spaniard will be helpful instead of being a hindrance to Suárez.

Newcastle United: Demba Ba

Harry Redknapp has stated Demba Ba's release clause is less than £7 million.

£7 million would be worth the risk on Ba, provided he only signs a two-year contract.

Now, Ba may want a longer contract to ensure stability, whereas Liverpool will be mindful of the Senegalese international's failed medical at Stoke City.

Valencia: Roberto Soldado
This season, Roberto Soldado scores a goal every 3.4 shots, compared to Andy Carroll's 14.6 shots per goal.

Soldado's contract ends in two years time and, provided he doesn't sign a contract extension anytime soon, it would be smart if Liverpool made a move for him in the summer.

That being said, smart isn't a word I'd use to describe Liverpool management, so £20-25 million is a fair transfer fee for Soldado right now.

PSV Eindhoven: Tim Matavž

I stumbled across Tim Matavž because I was watching PSV Eindhoven's game against Rapid Bucureşti due to the hyped Georginio Wijnaldum and Zakaria Labyad.

Interestingly, Matavž played for Groningen, so there's the Groningen connection again.

He certainly has good football IQ, as I've seen bypass offside traps with ease.

He had a breakout 2011, scoring 24 goals.
Schalke: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

The safest and most realistic transfer target would be Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

You may be worried that he didn't last at Real Madrid or A.C. Milan, but here's what you need to know: in 13 starts for Real Madrid, he scored eight goals.

At Milan, he was thrown in one week, and thrown out the next week.

Huntelaar is a forward that needs to play week in, week out.

When he does, he scores, like 26 goals in 27 games this season for Schalke.

His partnership with Luis Suárez would be rekindled in an instant because they combined for 95 goals in two seasons.

Liverpool Transfer Rumours: 10 Latest Players Linked with Moves to and from Club

Milos Krasic

Serbian winger Milos Krasic has been linked with a move to Liverpool for £12 million.

The Juventus player is apparently not wanted by coach Antonio Conte which could see the former CSKA Moscow winger seek football elsewhere.

A loan deal is also mentioned in the article which might suit Liverpool's budget a little better, particularly since Krasic is an unknown quantity in the Premier League.

Dalglish probably can't afford any more transfer slip-ups.

Joao Carlos Teixeira

It seems uncertain whether a fee has been agreed or not, but stories are circulating that Liverpool are close to signing youngster Joao Carlos Teixeira from Sporting Lisbon.

Kenny Dalglish has confirmed an interest in the player, but stopped short of saying the club had made a bid.

£850,000 is the figure mentioned for the player who is regarded as the next Deco.

Esteban Granero

Esteban Granero is rumoured to be the subject of an £8 million bid from Liverpool.

The Real Madrid midfielder isn't seeing much playing time under coach Jose Mourinho, and Kenny Dalglish might want the adaptable player to give him more attacking options in midfield.

Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson have yet to really impress the Kop on a regular basis after signing in the Summer, and Dalglish would be loathe to spend too much money on another unproven Premiership player.

Nikica Jelavic

Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic has apparently indicated that he is holding out for a move to Liverpool after being linked with clubs such as QPR and Fulham recently.

Rangers signed the Croatian in August 2010 for £4 million but are likely to want more than that to let their striker leave.

Eyefootball.com suggests that Liverpool have declared an interest and Jelavic's father and agent has suggested his son is more likely to sign for Liverpool.

Ricky Van Wolkswinkel

Following on from their reported interest in Lisbon's Joao Teixeira, the Reds have also been linked with a move for Sporting's Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

Lazio are apparently set to make a £13 million bid for the Dutchman which would mean Liverpool would have to move fast.

Van Wolfswinkel has scored 7 goals in 11 appearances for Sporting Lisbon so far this season.

Luis Suarez

Liverpool fans will be hoping that recent speculation linking their star striker with Real Madrid is just pure fabrication.

The Uruguayan is currently serving his ban for racism, but Inter Milan have also been linked to a move for the player who cost the Reds £25 million in January 2011.

Scott Sinclair

Swansea youngster Scott Sinclair has been playing well in the Premier League this season and his performances have allegedly caught the eye of Liverpool scouts.

Sinclair is believed to be available for approximately £5 million and would give Liverpool some more pace on their wings.

Stephane Sessegnon

Stephane Sessegnon has come alive since Martin O'Neill took over at Sunderland and he is becoming a lot more consistent in his performances.

The Daily Mail claim Liverpool are chasing the player and are prepared to offer £8 million for his services

Sessegnon scored one and made one in the weekends win over Swansea..

Andy Carroll

Liverpool's misfiring ponytailed hitman Andy Carroll has been the subject of much speculation of late after stories emerged stating that Newcastle United were preparing to offer Liverpool a cut price deal in order to take the 6ft 5 Geordie back to the North East club.

Kenny Dalglish has slammed the talk as having absolutely no foundation which suggests that Carroll will be a Liverpool player for a while longer yet.

Jermain Defoe

The Jermain Defoe rumours haven't gone away just yet as the English striker responded to recent speculation by stating he just wants to play football.

With Euro 2012 looming in the Summer, Defoe will want to play regularly to increase his chances of making the England squad.

Defoe played and scored in the weekends loss to Manchester City.

Liverpool Sign Joao Carlos Teixeira

Liverpool have signed promising young playmaker Joao Carlos Teixeira from Sporting Lisbon, it is understood.

Following the original reports of Liverpool’s interest and subsequent bid for Teixeira, we reported that a deal was expected to be concluded early this week, and so it has transpired in a move believed to be worth around an initial £1m.

The 19-year-old will slot into the Reds’ reserve set-up if he comes over right away, where he will be monitored for the remainder of the season to determine when he might be ready to make the step up to the first team squad. He could yet be allowed to stay with Sporting and link up with Liverpool in the summer.
