Redknapp in summer swoop for Ferdinand
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is planning a summer raid for troubled Rio Ferdinand, who has endured a torrid two months for club and country. The Manchester United defender could even be left out of the team against Blackburn tomorrow after being given the run-around by Fernando Torres in last Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Liverpool. Sportsmail can reveal that United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is already targeting Everton’s 18-year-old utility player Jack Rodwell as one for the future. And with Northern Irish defender Jonny Evans knocking on the door of the Old Trafford first team, Ferdinand’s long-term standing at United is in question for the first time since he joined them seven years ago. Ferguson is monitoring the progress of Rodwell and has asked close associates for reports on the teenager’s personality and potential. Rodwell, who signed a five-year deal at Goodison Park in February, is also being tracked by Chelsea and Liverpool. He has made his name as a defensive midfield player, but it is thought he has the potential to develop into a classy central defender in the future.

Obertan may make bench
Gabriel Obertan could be in line to make his Barclays Premier League debut against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
The French winger made his Reds bow in Tuesday's Carling Cup triumph at Barnsley, and Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that he may again be involved against Sam Allardyce's side this weekend.
"It was Gabriel’s first real game on Tuesday," Sir Alex told his pre-match press conference on Friday. "He’s had a few runouts for the Reserves but I think it’s too early for him to start tomorrow. It depends on injuries – he may get on the bench."
Although glimpses of the 20-year-old winger have been fleeting so far, Sir Alex is in little doubt of Obertan's pedigree.
"He’s settled in well and he definitely has ability – he has marvellous pace, which is always important in football today," said the manager.
"He’s overcome his injury, which is the most important thing. He didn’t know about his injury when he signed him and we’ve picked it up. Hopefully we’ve corrected it." |
