* Goryeo 고려 has two meanings.
1) 高麗 The name of the Korean kingdom (918~1392)
2) 考慮 consider The funny discussion between Moo-Hyul and Bang-Won was a pun with the same sound “Goryeo” but different meanings. It is too bad the pun must be lost in translation.
* General Choi Young’s accusation against Hong In-Bang’s servant is loosely based on a true story. Yeom Heung-Bang (廉興邦, the real historical figure “Hong In-Bang” is based on) had a servant named Yi Gwang (李 光, “Daegun” in SFD; Yeon-Hee’s rapist in ep. 4)“. Yi Gwang was wielding his master’s power in order to exploit people and steal commoner’s land. One day, A man named Jo Ban (趙胖) whose land was taken away by Yi Gwang killed him in a fit of anger, and set fire to his house. Infuriated by his servant’s death, Yeom Heung-Bang framed Jo Ban for treason. But even his severe torture couldn’t lead Jo Ban into a false confession. General Choi Young (崔 瑩) intervened and investigated how things really happened, and found out Jo Ban was not guilty. Under the order of King U, Choi Young joined forces with General Yi Seong-Gye and took advantage of the chance to drive out the corrupt Dodang trio. Except for Yi In-Im (“Yi In-Gyem” in SFD) who was good friends with Choi Young, the rest two were executed, and their families were degenerated into slaves. But as you’ve seen in the drama, SFD writers changed many details of the historical event. As a result, we can’t predict how things will happen to the Dodang trio in the future.
