BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) for Android and iOS is finally getting shut down after 13 years of service on May 31.

Creative Media Works (CMW), the company that was working with BlackBerry on the app's development, wrote in a blog post that the shutdown is due to the inability of the app to compete against its rivals despite their best efforts.

"Instant messaging is a very fluid and competitive market. Since 2016 we have tried our best to compete in this market and launch many new features and content that we had hoped would grow the BBM user base. Despite all of our efforts, we found that the network effect of the market leaders is getting stronger and we have been squeezed out of user preferences," read the shutdown FAQ.

CMW also assured users that the data stored on BBM servers would be deleted seven days after the shutdown, warning that user data will not be accessible after the shutdown. If users have any important documents, images, or videos that they want saved, they should be downloaded before the shutdown on May 31.

As a replacement to BBM, BlackBerry will be making its BBM Enterprise (BBMe) service available to all consumers which offers message encryption like competitors WhatsApp and WeChat.

The new BBMe app is available to Android users right now on Google Play and Apple store. BBMe is a subscription service, so users will have to pay a subscription fee of US$2.49 (RM10.35) for six months of service. However the service will be free for the first year.

Walaupun saya tak pakai, tp saya suka konsep BBM ni sbb lebih privacy berbanding whatsapp. Apa2 pun, phone blackberry yg ada keyboard ttp pujaan hati. Lepas ni nak tukar ke blackberry key 2

iols pernah terbeli BB indon back in 2010. babi betul. takleh masuk dengan internet Malaysia. cuma boleh call / text mesej jaaa..
