Team Lotus buys Caterham Cars

Team Lotus Enterprise has announced that it has fully purchased British sportscar maker Caterham Cars. The buyout has been performed by Tony Fernandes, Kamarudin Meranun and SM Nasarudin – those behind the Team Lotus Formula 1 outfit – and means F1 technology will now feature on the road vehicles.

The transaction in question should not be confused with Group Lotus, which is the name behind Lotus Cars and title sponsor of the Renault Formula 1 team.

‘As custodians of Colin Chapman's two-seater Seven since 1973, Caterham has been responsible for the evolution of a car originally conceived as a 'fit for purpose' race-car for the road in 1957,’ reads a Team Lotus statement.

“Caterham has a unique place at the heart of the motoring world,” added Team Principal Fernandes. “As well as being proudly and staunchly British, it has an enviable and uniquely unblemished reputation within the industry for performance, handling and engineering excellence.

“Caterham Cars has remained wholly faithful to Colin Chapman's philosophy of 'less is more' and the DNA of the original Seven can still be traced to the newest additions to Caterham's product offering.”

Lotus signs Ruroc as new helmet supplier

Team Lotus has announced that it has joined forced with Ruroc, the British helmet and goggle manufacturer, which becomes an official supplier of the squad. The RG-1 model of helmet will now be worn by the pit crew of the Norfolk-based squad.

“I am delighted that we have Ruroc on-board as an official supplier,” says Team Lotus CEO Riad Asmat. “Ruroc's ‘Think Extreme’ approach is exactly what we need from our suppliers and we are all excited about the commercial and brand benefits we will bring each other.”

“We are obviously delighted to be supporting Team Lotus and believe that our approach to extreme protection will keep us working together to achieve first-class results,” adds David Pearson, Managing Director of Ruroc.

In Turkey on Sunday, Jarno Trulli raced to 18th position whereas Heikki Kovalainen was beset by hydraulics problems and dropped a further lap behind in 19th.

Lotus eyes one-second improvement
autosport.com
Wed, 18 May 10:45:04 2011

Team Lotus technical chief Mike Gascoyne believes the updates to be introduced in the Spanish Grand Prix will make its car a full second quicker eventually.

The Norfolk-based squad will be running a major upgrade package from this weekend's race in Barcelona, and Gascoyne reckons it will allow the team to take a clear step forward into the midfield.

The updates include a new aero package as well as a different exhaust system and diffuser.

Gascoyne expects Lotus to gain a second once it can get everything working properly.

"It might take us a couple of races to fully exploit it, as I think it is going to depend on the blown floor and engine strategies and some people have more experience than us with that," said Gascoyne in the Team Lotus Notes.

"But we expect our update to be significant. I think we'll see a big step and I think there is more to come over the coming races."

When asked how much he expected the updates to be worth, he said: "We're expecting it to be about a second, up to a second.

"It is a very significant update package. We think our update is going to allow us to take a clear step into the midfield, so that we are qualifying with them and out-racing them more and more.

"So, I think that we are reasonably happy, but Barcelona, it's got to see the next step forward."

Gascoyne also revealed the team is planning to introduce a blown diffuser, despite the FIA's plan to ban off-throttle systems.

"It's all built around the rear end. It's a Red Bull-style exhaust and diffuser package," he said.

"We didn't implement a blown diffuser last year, so we had one for the start of this year, but we were only able to really evaluate that in the wind tunnel from Christmas onwards, so we were playing catch-up in that area.

"I think with a lot of the teams, you can see it's been a hot topic at the start of this year, so it's pretty natural that that was going to be an area we looked at and we've seen from the development we've done that it's a very big step - far bigger than you normally would expect to be making, which is why everybody else has obviously done it.

"But the good thing is it means that we can catch up with those in front who already have it."

Kovalainen wary of Force India's KERS
autosport.com
Sat, 21 May 19:45:04 2011

Heikki Kovalainen fears that he will fall behind both Force Indias on the run to the first corner of the Spanish Grand Prix because Team Lotus is not running KERS.

Lotus is one of only three teams, along with Virgin and HRT, not running the hybrid system, which offers an 80bhp power boost for 6.7s per lap.

After earning a 15th place start - the team's best qualifying performance in a dry session and equal to their best showing in Malaysia last year the Finn expects to be on the defensive at the start despite outqualifying both Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta.

"They will have passed before the braking, if we all do the same starts," said Kovalainen when asked by AUTOSPORT where he will be at the first corner.

"The power of KERS is a lot and their straightline speed advantage is quite high anyway. That's one area where we are losing a lot because our aero efficiency is not very good here."

Kovalainen added that he is hopeful of being able to keep the Force Indias behind him in the early laps if he does make it to the first corner ahead. But once the DRS is enabled, he will struggle to do so.

"I am on the clean side and starts have been very good for us, so if I can get to the exit of the corner ahead I can stay ahead.

"But once they start using the DRS after a couple of laps, it will be difficult to keep them behind because their straightline speed advantage is 15-20km/h."
